I'm completely unable to start SL or the SL RC on Vista x64 Ultimate. As soon as I start it up it crashes. I been searching the forums and Google and the only SL on Vista x64 threads I can find are at least a year old. Has anyone been able to get SL running on Vista x64 recently?

My machine is:
Q9450 + Asus P5E3
4GB RAM
ATI 4870 w/ 8.6 Driver and OGL version 6.14.10.7659
Vista Ultimate x64
The latest SL client.

Is there a safe mode I can use to try other options for starting SL? SecondLife --safe doesn't seem to change the behavior. It looks like the crash is an interaction between SL and the ATI OGL drivers.

The call stack during the crash is:
atioglxx!DrvPresentBuffers+0xa4
atioglxx!DrvPresentBuffers+0x3daa4
atioglxx!DrvPresentBuffers+0x14fb1
atioglxx!atiPS+0x62f034

Hi,
I am running Sl on Vista 64 Ultimate since mid of 2007 without issues. I have an Nvidia GPU though while you have an ATI GPU. Maybe the GPU Driver is the problem. Can t say i am no technician.
But in general SL should run with Vista 64 Ultimate. Greetings MM

I also ran SL on Vista 64. The only reason I dumped it for 32 bit was, the new AMD true quad core uses a technique to fluctuate the memory voltages to save power in its attempt to comply with current regualtions of reducing the world power usages (Cool and Quiet). The result was destabalizing the OS.

Most likely its your gpu... New ati's suck ball_s i just sent back two 3870 X2's because they have so many bugs and incompatibilities with most motherboards that i bought Nvidia gtx 280 it works excellent everywhere except SL. I'm having issue with textures, namely clothes and skins. Whenever i create a cloth its totally white (say, a jacket) covering whole body except head... Skins i see as black on bottom part - no matter what texture is applied... Checked on my laptop same clothes and skins are fine = my GPU. Does SL say that your vga is unkown ? It does with mine... im waiting for the client update...

This would be a matter of opinion....i run a 4870 as well and im able to run SL without any big issues i crash after a hour or so using CCC 8.7.. heard rumors of another new driver that supposed to be more compliant..New Ati GC's are rockin..they are hot.. but can be fixed wit ha minor tweak..the 3870x2 where not the best.. i got one as well. 4870 is better..and the 4870 is nippin at the 280s ass.. and with the up n coming 4870x2 fixin to drop.. it will beat out the 280 for a lesser price as well....and for the problem here with sl.. im not sure.. Im running a amd 9950 be..4870..8gis of ram..vista ult 64 bit. sl is the only issue i have..loads up fine.. runs fine.. just crashes after a hour of use for some reason...im betting a driver issue.."edit" for another weird reason it hasnt crashed after a few hours now...i dont know.

photo bucket of it....url]http://s349.photobucket.com/albums/q387/shegotlockjaw/?action=view&current=Slfpssnapshot_002.jpg[/url]

I used to swear by ATI cards.... I have 4 systems, 2 use ATI and 2 use nVidia. Up until a year or so ago, ATI's were stable and good, nVidia's seem to suffer pallete issues. Now, when we talk about an OpenGL platform such as SL, nVidia's rule.

I make machinima in SL, my nVidia GC's give me excellent quality at high frame rates, whats more, they give me stability. If you are talking DirectX platforms, well there maybe room for debate.

Yeah SL seem to be the only thing my Ati cards have any real issues with..the 4870 still runs smoother than my 9800gtx did.. but sl is a nvidia based app..i still get decent fps within sl..only time i have real issues now is when i go to somwhere..lets say. Dance island for example "just for the crowd" it would slow down..but that is typical..and lots to do with networking lag other than the gpu itself..

Did you find a solution?
08-02-2008 07:58
Hi. I just saw this thread. There are two other recently posted about Vista64 and SL and ATI cards' not working. Also a JIRA bug report. Please add your vote and comments there to help LL work out the bugs. BTW, I think the fault is mainly in ATI's 64bit VISTA driver lack of OpenGL compliance. Of course, LL should state this in their system reqs. I had to go back to an older nvidia 8800gt card from an ATI 4850 because SL would crash all the time on it. Any one get it to work? Please stick to Vista64 and ATI...people like to go off on an ATI vs Nvidia War or words...not really helpful. Btw, people are moving to ATI 4800 series now because of price point and speed over Nvidia. Period. If we all had tons of money I'm sure we would all be running SLI x280 cards...and $1000 in the hole. :) thanks.

It looks like an issue with ATI's OGL driver. I tried running blender on this machine and it crashed in the exact same place. The call stack was different, but in both cases, "atioglxx!DrvPresentBuffers+0xa4" was on top of the stack.

At least you can turn off Vertex Buffers in Preferences, Graphics, Hardware, not so sure about Blender. Have you tried to override that using the GC control panel? Mosr defaults are 'let application decide'.

on Vista Nvidia is the way to go. I refuse to buy a PC with an ATI, because ATI's drivers are shoddy.

Use 8.9 Beta drivers
09-15-2008 07:52
Hi.

Just a quick note that I've been able to use the new 8.9 Beta drivers with SL for the last week...and it's by far the best solution for Vista64. They seemed to added the correct OpenGL extensions SL needed. Still not the best framerates...but, maybe the final 8.9 will fixt that. Also make sure you turn off DWM...google that (basically turns off the pretty Vista GUI) I saw a speed up after that....Check the JIRA ticket for the download link...:)

Just got myself an ATI 4870x2 and it works perfect with everything except SL, i crash within seconds from logging in. Will try the 8.9 beta drivers and see if that helps.
