I have been having freeze up problems in slate all night long. I just logged on yet again and my avatar flew backwards off world.
Problems I have been having:
Avatar cannot fly or land Aravar cannot talk in chat only in IM Map goes red all over Cannot build or edit existing objects
I relog which is a temp fix apparently as I have had to relog several times now. This is getting irratating. I sent a bug report I talked to a Linden now I am just miffed. All my building time this week is slowly being sucked up by these problems.

What we have seen...
07-09-2003 14:49
Hi All,
Many thanks Catherine for providing a time and location. That helps a bunch when looking throuhg logs.
What our logs show involves the following: 1. The IP is switching (but the ports remain the same) during the session.
2. A reverse IP lookup suggests that the two IP's are in the the same range as would be issued with the Internet provider (either DSL or Cable).
3. This is likely due to dynamic network reconfiguration on the part of the ISP.
4. We can't gracefully handle IP switching due to hack attempts and "trust" issues (such as spoofing). We establish that level of trust once you log in, using a particular IP address.
The only thing that we can suggest is: Contact your ISP and ask them why they are dynamically changing the IP address of your machine. You may want to tell them that you are in the middle of a secure protocol circuit that does NOT use TCP (we use UPD) and that dynamic IP changing is bad during this transaction.
Some ISPs offer static IP's, but they usually cost more.
If this is all greek to you, I'll writei up a knowledge base entry that puts it in semi-plain English.
Many thanks to Andrew for his help with this. Best Wishes,
-Peter

So I have had the same dsl service since Apr and now all of the sudden its causing a problem that may or may involve me spending extra $ on a secure decticated IP addy. Well now I find that interesting but sorry I dont buy it; as others also experienced problems in slate eariler in the evening.
There was a problem in slate it did not in my opinion have to do with my dsl or my computer; thats my story and I am sticking to it.
Now just so you know I did not have the same problem yesterday.

Catherine Have you had any more problems since the 10th, I have been living in Slate from the 12 on and have not had any problems as you have but I am concerned for the Sim since I call it home. I will surely post any issues if they develop and hopefully none will. I am not sure I buy the provider story since you have had the same provider since april but...sometimes providers do change how they do things usually to save them money so I guess it might be them as LL indicated.

The symptoms you mentioned (can't build, can't edit, sims go red on the map, can't talk publicly but IM works, flying in odd directions, flying off the map, etc) remind me of packet loss. Hit Alt+1 and see if you are dropping any packets when this starts happening. Unfortunately my network (an extremely odd configuration, regular Ethernet ports in each room but then wireless to the central building) is completely jacked up about half the time, so that kind of thing is a daily experience for me. Right now it's holding together (knock on wood)...
If they changed your IP in the middle of a session you'd need to relog, I wager. DHCP leases last for two days around here so that isn't a huge problem for me... if you have DSL you probably don't use a DHCP server though, they probably have you set up on PPPOE... I don't know if IPs have a "lifetime" with that, as they do with DHCP.

Catherine your provider. or your telco, may be in the midst of reconfiguring or upgrading areas of their network. This is usually intended to be transparent but often results in IP oddity. I went through this with Earthlink. Unfortunately it took them about two weeks to finally get it all right.
When it happens, try resetting your router or DSL/Cable modem to refresh the IP address. Logging in and out on your computer, or even refreshing the computer's IP, shouldn't work because your router/modem's IP address will still be out of lease/unavailable from the pool/whatever.
If they're telling you your IP address is changing though, I'd believe them, as there are a variety of tools in place to make it pretty certain they're not guessing.

From: someone If they're telling you your IP address is changing though, I'd believe them, as there are a variety of tools in place to make it pretty certain they're not guessing. Yep. As the one who looked into this I can attest that we have the tools. The logs showed that CC was connected via SOME_IP: OME_PORT when all of a sudden we started to get message from NEW_IP: OME_PORT while at the same time we stopped receiving anything from SOME_IP. Since SOME_PORT is a random port up in the 10's of thousands it is unlikely that a new connection would have the same port, but this sudden burst of packets did. Meanwhile, the connection to SOME_IP: OME_PORT eventually timed out and CC found herself disconnected. Doing a reverse lookup on SOME_IP and NEW_IP showed that they appear to be two distinct routers owned by the same ISP. While it would be nice if we could adapt to sudden changes of IP addresses and re-establish trusted communication on the fly, there is a bit of work that has to be done to maintain security, so that capability will take a while to develop.

Imagine when they all switch to IPv6.

When I run the game now a dos window is also always present any reason for this? It spews information about where my avatar goes and does constantly. When I log out is says "goodbye" rofl i thought it was funny at first but if I shut that window (not min. it) the game ends too. Whats up with this dos window and how do i get rid of it?
