Sorry to be the 1 gazillionth person to ask this question. My computer is about 5 years old, and I need to upgrade. I will not have Vista, as I have it on my laptop and it is a disaster. In order to get XP, I plan to buy a Dell, and replace the ATI graphics card with a nVidia 9800. Dell does not offer the XP option with any nVidia cards.

It is a Dell XPS 625
AMD ATHLON x2 5600 pROCESSOR, 2.96 GHz
XP Professional SP3
Memoray -- 4GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 800 MHz
500 GB Hard Drive
ATI Radeon HD4670 512MB Graphics Card

Questions:

Will this system work with SL?
Do you think nVidia 9800 is the right card to replace the ATI Radeon?
Can I upgrade to Windows 7 on this system when it is available?

Thanking you in advance for your comments and guidance!

Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a PC without OS and get a 2nd hand XP license somewhere rather than buying 2 graphic cards only to throw one away? Or run Linux? Other option would be to get a machine with Vista business that allows you to downgrade to XP. But not all vendors offer that.

Have you considered going to a local 'ma and pa' computer store and having your new machine custom built ? The ones near me just charge for the parts and assemble for free if you spend a few hundred. For a gaming machine that might be cheaper than Dell and work just as well or even better.

I've been building my own desktops for a long time. The only drawback I've ever seen to the home built boxes is that they can be a little noisier than the brand name ones.
