Was it just me, or did the game break today?? I mean it's the same ol client and I was able to play for the past 2 nights, but tonight the client would freeze during "precaching" or "getting inventory". Did this only happen to me? I hope it's fixed because me not getting my FIX of second life has forced me to play console games Infact I'm typing this as the game is frozen now, and the task manager can't seem to close it, or its process, and I have to reboot to get rid of the stupid friggen thing. Yeah, there's your other technical issue, even the task manager can't cancel the thing's process. Any way around that? To anyone who wanted to see me tonight (mainly Lena probably, if we got accepted into doing the wild west town project) sorry but I guess I can't get in...

Yeah, there's your other technical issue, even the task manager can't cancel the thing's process. Any way around that? Wait. Ten minutes. Or Fifteen. Or Twenty (I think that's the longest I've had to wait). Bites, doesn't it? <s> That's Beta for ya. It'll get better. =) #!

Are you running XP? There is a "bug" or it's not really a bug, but anyways... for some reason XP reads your whole HD if you run SL after your first boot up. Simply let it run... then when it comes back, exit SL and start it again.

I misread Dave's post. I thought he was talking about freezing after a crash, which is the problem I've had a time or five (both on my own poor little ancient clunker as well as my husbands much newer Athlon 1600 -- both of us run 2k server).

Simply let it run... then when it comes back, exit SL and start it again. Let what run, and when what comes back? Basically I load up the client, click connect, the green glowing bar goes across, and then when it hits "loading inventory" it freezes halfway through. It's happening again tonight, I tried changing my preferances and various options but it's not fixing anything. I think that something in my inventory is breaking the load, I wouldn't know though. No there is no crashing, simply the client freezes, thus freezing my computer (I can't alt-tab anymore, and ctrl + alt + del won't work either. this is tonight, whereas last night those 2 things did work). Stats: WinXP Althon XP 2100+ 768MB DDR PC2700 2 HDs 60GB each (SL installed on primary WinXP drive) 100MBit line (college connection) Need I say more? I want my second life back!!!

Tell me I am not seeing that. Are you saying you and hubby are both running SERVER-SIDE Windows Software as your Desktop Client Operating System?? And an OLD one at that (ie: Win2K) with all its extra server garbage routines running in the background? An OS, that aside from being older... was never MEANT to run high-intensity real-time graphical applications? If that is the case, RUN don't walk to your nearest WinXP dealer. It is time for a make-over both over AND under the hood.

2k pro is really nice actually.. i have not had a single problem with it since installing, and would gladly take it over 98 or NT4. Its still too soon for me to decide if I like it better than xp though (just installed xp yesterday). After the problems I had w/xp drivers (which I never had with 2k) I'm leaning towards liking 2k more. We'll see

If that is the case, RUN don't walk to your nearest WinXP dealer. It is time for a make-over both over AND under the hood. Heheh. Sorry, but you did see exactly what you thought you saw. I know XP is better for gaming, but I'm not a game player. No really, I'm not. I do run multiple servers on my system -- some because I have to, some because I want to. In the 2 years I've been running 2kS, I've had exactly one problem that I would classify as Somewhat Major, and I finally resolved it during my 8 day enforced hiatus from SL (had to find something to occupy my time). I am gonna get a new system as soon as I can. Rather doubt I'll "upgrade" to XP tho. =) #!

#1 Your computer seems to lock up... but it doesn't! Is your HD going nuts? Because there is a bug with SL, that all WinXP users have. For some reason WinXP reads your entire HD the first time you log into SL after a boot up. What i'm telling you is that if it's is reading your HD while doing this.... let it go! I have to do this every night! I start SL and leave my computer for 5 mins because it locks up. But then comes back (it takes to long and the SL servers timeout, so all you have to do is exit and reload SL) #2 If your HD is not going nuts check your Cache setting... another bug with XP. Sl locks up when cache is set to 1000megs

From: someone Because there is a bug with SL, that all WinXP users have. Just as a note, I do not have this problem and I do have WinXP pro. I have a 40GB HD, about 30GB that Windows can see (the other 10 is for linux dual boot). I do have my windows cache/swap file on a seperate 1gb partition to keep it from fragmenting. The only freeze I occasionally get is on 'registering client' and that only occurs sometimes when I try to log in right after I was kicked out (sim going down or something), and not always then.

Well what can I tell you, there is a bug that makes XP read your HD. I told Andrew I was having that problem and they said they were working on it.

<shrug> I have no doubt that some, or even most XP users have that bug. And in fact it does sound like dave may be having this same bug.
I was just saying that not ALL xp users have this bug, because I do not. If anyone wants more detailed information on my system to help track down the bug please let me know.
