Some of you may met Zelgadas & I in SL. We have a house together & belong to a group together. We also own two plots of land connected to each other. Zelgadas is better with the building than I am so I let him build our home across both of our lands. He set the permission to all of the different parts to allow group members to have full rights (group members being me). Here's the problem. Zel is color blind ... and a boy hehe ... he can't decorate ... but I can. So I try to replace the textures on our walls & floors, but I can't. The question is why?

Probably the infamous "group edit bug". It just doesn't work good. Sometimes you just can't change the object, even if you are in the same group and the permission is correct.
What I do about it: deselect the object, goto My Groups. Select No Group, press activate, select your group again, press activate.
After you've done this you can probably change the objects. If not then try it again.
I don't get why this bug isn't gone yet. I'm a programmer myself and it seems like a really simple thing to check for and to fix....

either it is low priority (my guess) or it isn't as simple as it seems, especially since multiple groups were not part of the original design of the world. Talia, you are not alone some people have gone so far as to leave a group and be re-invited just to be able to edit each others objects. edit- did i mention that they did this on a daily, and sometimes even hourly basis heh

I guess that would explain it. Interestingly, I've never had trouble editing any of Talia's objects. As for the bug, itself; many bugs, when you fix them, cause a ripple effect that creates more bugs elsewhere. The Lindens might know what fixing the group editing bug will affect, and so they are waiting until they have solutions to those problems, too.

Zel is in 2 groups which may be the cause of the problem. Maybe because I'm only in the one group I created for the 2 of us that's why he has no trouble editing my objects.

Ok, two things. Having been bitten by this particular bug extremely frequently, let me give you some pointers. First of all, even when you are in a group with someone else and all is working beautifully, you will not be able to texture/color each other's prims no matter what. That part of the bug is pretty ugly. Group or no, the only person who can texture an object is the owner. Sure, it will let you in, and even let you think you are doing it, and it will even look like it is working, but the moment you leave the focus of that object, back it goes to it's original state. All you can do to someone else's object is move, resize, and rotate it. You can alter the name and description too. And add content. Just not texture/color. Secondly, as far as editing in general goes, if you "loose permissions" to edit something that you can clearly see is in your group, one of you will need to leave the group. This has nothing to do with how many groups you are in. Fey Brightwillow and I are in only one group--ours (sounds like your setup) and we STILL have this issue. Basically, I created the group, asked her to join, she joins, we edit. When one or both of us cannot get our editing work done, I ask her to leave the group then come back in. She leaves it by editing her groups from the first or second menu (I forget which, but one of them is My Groups something like that) and clicking leave. I never leave since I am the originator of the group and have no idea what that might do. Also, make sure you are both officers...that way if one of you leaves (on purpose or accidentally), in theory the other can add you back in. That I can tell, being an officer versus being a member has no impact on the ability (or inability in some cases) to edit prims. The Group Edit Texture bug was confirmed to me by two different Lindens, so I have to presume it's real. Hope that helps. Good luck to the both of you!

According to the release notes for 0.7.0, which was released today, this bug is fixed.
Be sure to browse the release notes; you might learn about some features that you didn't know about.

I can confirm that the texture edit portion of the bug is fixed. Only time will tell if the rest is fixed or not, but the ability to edit group object textures is in fact working! Thanx, LL!

It's back
05-08-2004 18:46
This bug, or a similar one, is back. This time it's worse.
I'm in a small "family" type group. I am an officer of the group, but not the creator.
I spent a couple of hours working on a build a little while ago on group land. At one point, I realized that I had a different group set.
Simple, think I. I select everything in the area where I've been working, and set the group to the correct one.
Now I have a bunch of objects that show:
Creator: Grim Lupis Owner: Grim Lupis Group: Lupis Jade
You cannot modify this object.
And just in case anyone wants to ask: I now have the proper group set. But everything That I built and THEN set to the group I can not edit, even though I am creator AND owner.
Also a related matter. Last weekend we were working on a group build together. She created an object (building support post) that needed to be copied around the base of the structure. So, I drag-copy one of them and move it into position, but it's too short. When I try to lengthen it, I noticed similar problems with those listed above. Note that we both have modify rights on each other's objects, so it shouldn't matter who the owner is.
Objects originally created while I have the proper group active work fine. We can even edit each other's objects, so long as we don't copy them, or retro-actively set the group. At that point, neither one of us can edit them. :-/
Very frustrating. :-/

The permission system sucks. It will be replaced with a creative commons licensing system. I'm just wondering if that will suck any less, and what manner of weirdness will result from the move. I had objects spontaneously turn (no copy)(no modify)(no transfer) after the last change, and they said it was by design! What no one mentioned was what kind of mind-altering substances were consumed prior to this "design". I also got burned when they suddenly decided we couldn't get textures out of objects anymore. I spent the better part of beta acquiring objects for the sole purpose of using their texture later

if you really way compeltely and i mean with your life trust the each other, you can right click each others calling cards and choose "grant modify permissions." this'll let you both edit each other's items as if you owned them yourselves.
