I would like to know, regarding the size of the area, the check involved when I direct my Av to sit somewhere. What are the minimum constraints allowable for an av to successfully sit on a given area?

not sure on that but I do know from past experiences that sometimes the angle and location of your avatar is involved ....
I made a swingset that wouldnt allow me to sit on it said not enough room ... I moved closer and more in front of it and tried again and I sat down ..
so ya may want to just try moving closer and repositioning yourself and try again..
The actial required dementions I do not know sorry

It works as follows...
The system looks at the exact object you clicked on, not the root object of a linked set, but the object under your mouse. It then finds the nearest spot to you, on that object...that way you can sit on any side of an object, by approaching from different directions. It then tries to find room for your torso right on top of that nearest spot. (That's why the swing set only worked when you approached from the front...if you try to sit on the side of a swing set, the chains get in the way...)
Oh, and it assumes that your torso is basically a .2 meter deep, .3 meter wide, .5 meter tall box... Clear as mud?
So keep in mind, approach from the proper direction, click on the exact object you want to place your butt on (the seat cushion of a chair, for example) and make sure to leave room for a .2x.3x.5 box on top of that object.
Don't worry, we'll improve this system eventually, but the goal is to allow people to sit anywhere they could physically fit their avatar (and then some!)...

...and with a quick jerk of his head, the welders helmet falls into place as it has done countless times before. The hiss, the scratch, the pop of the torch. CAMERA ZOOM OUT Molten steel, like a thousand fireflies, dance to the intro to Heavy Metal... FADE TO BLACK
