From: someone Originally posted by Kat Cartier Well, the thing is, it doesnt work. I installed SL, ran it.. the loader bar thing goes just past halfway then BOOM.. the entire program just vanishes as if I never opened it. Welcome back Exactly the same thing happened on my system the first time I tried to log in after installing the 1.2.9 update. Loading....Loading....POOF!!! I immediately tried again, and it worked fine. My hardware configuration is totally different from yours (Radeon/Celeron), so I don't think that's the problem. If you haven't yet, I'd suggest that you put dying on hold, reboot, delete everything in the SL cache (del C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name Here\Application Data\SecondLife\cache\*.* ) and try again. Hopefully it's just an initialization glitch in the current release.

Have you:
Re-loaded DX9?
Loaded the latest Nvidia drivers?
Tried unchecking the AGP option under the Options tab?
Uninstalled and reinstalled SL?
What kind of:
Cable/DSL?
OS?
And of course it wont help tonight but try an email to support@secondlife.com
Hope to see you in-world.

d'oh! yep, halfway through is where it becomes a server and starts receiving data at least the way Zone Alarm looks at it.
I think you've probably hit it.
What kind of firewall?

It sounds to me like SL is crashing hard on your system rather than banging its head on a firewall.
If SL is able to create its main window before it crashes then it should pop up a dialog that asks you if you want to submit a crash report which transfers the callstack and some logs that will provide us with some info as to where and why its crashing for you.
If SL crashes before it can create its main window then it just "vanishes".
When you try to launch SL are there any other windows open with the name "Second Life"? If so, try closing those windows first.
If that suggestion doesn't apply or help, then it might be a file permissions issue. That is, if SL is unable to open crucial files or directories it may just bail rather than pop up a helpful dialog (dunno... i'd have to check the code).
Hrm... I don't have any other ideas at the moment.

If you don't see any windows named Second Life and have Windows XP, go to the Processes tab of CTRL+ALT+DEL and delete SL processes. That may work.

Andrew, when it happened that one time on my system, it was a crash to desktop before reaching the main window, and the crash reporter did not appear. It wasn't a case of multiple processes either. Nor, was it a file permissions issue.
I'm thinking...maybe some overly aggressive pop-up or ad blocker type of program??? Also Kat, you might try disabling any anti-virus software; and then do a complete uninstall and reinstall to a different hard drive if you have one, or at least a different directory.
I would hope that a software firewall like ZA wouldn't interfere without at least giving the user a choice to block or permit traffic. The built-in Windows XP firewall by itself definitely does not interfere with SL. I suppose that a hardware, network proxy, or NAT sort of wall might be a problem, but for a home computer system that's pretty unlikely.
As Mr. Underhill has said, if the problem persists we would need more specific information about your system's configuration to diagnose the problem.
