All but avatar head turning solid black!

I am having the strangest problem. Nothing has changed on the computer I am using, but day before yesterday, whenever I am in world my avatar is solid black (with clothing shapes) except for my head.

When I go into appearence mode, I can see my actual outfit. Once I come back out of appearance mode, I go back to being solid black again. Others have said they see me as solid black also.

I have tried doing Make Outfit, that did not work. I have unistalled and reinstalled 3 times, and it still comes out like this.

As much as I love the catwoman look I have right now, I would really love to be able to see my clothing and skin again. Anyone have any suggestions for me?

Try deleting your cache Pen, I've had this problem before and it does seem to be texture-loading related.

hmmm.. Doesn't reinstalling delete the cache automatically? I will try this though, and see if it helps. Thank you for the tip!

Ok. Can't find the Cache.. hehe.. figures. I'm looking in my Secondlife program files but see nothing called this. Am I looking in the wrong place?

Nope. Cannot find the Cache anywhere.

I would file a bug report, but it won't do me any good because I'm not at home for another 2 weeks so can't get my email from LL.

The only other thing I can suggest is adjusting your display settings... Good luck anyway, and maybe 1.4.mumble will correct it by the time you get back.

Personally, I'd report the bug anyway, and state you'll be away so they don't close it ...

The really weird thing about this is that other people are also seeing me as solid black. So I know it is not just an issue with my display settings. It has to be something on SL's side because otherwise it would just render that way to me only. At least that seems the logical thought for me.

So yes, maybe some upgrade will fix this. I haven't seen others reporting the issue, so it could just be an isolated thing.

A friend I had that happen also: he was all black, but even his face/head/hair was black. The black was visible to all, and persisted for maybe four online sessions over a few days. The blackness went away with an upgrade (1.3.6?).

Tech support emailed their only response to him a month after the self-cure occurred, so don't count on any official assistance from the Lindens.

Well poop! The Update didn't cure my issue.

Any other ideas I may try? It simply can't be an issue on just my end if everyone else is seeing me the same way right? Or am I totally missing something?

In the meantime, I have put on ears and a tail to make the catsuit look more appealing. I am now in search for a whip. Might as well make the most of this till it gets fixed.

The SL cache is located at

%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\SecondLife\cache

For example if you run Windoze XP, you might find this at

C:\Documents and Settings\Pendari\Application Data\SecondLife\cache

Thank you Larry! I was able to find the cache and emptied it. Unfortunatly, it did not fix the problem.

Thank you again though for your help. And at least now I know where to find the cache if I ever need to.

well i dont know if this will help you in your case, but i had a verry similar issue when i first started SL and the solution is a bit odd for me , i run a Dual monitor setup with a 21 inch sony as the main monitor and a 17 inch LCD as the secondary,both run off an ATI Radeon 9800 pro vid card, in this configuration whenever i tried to change clothes i would end up black till i relogged into SL.

what fixed it for me was to go into display properties in the controll pannel and setting the LCD to the main monitor and the Sony to the secondary when i play SL (its the oly game ive had trouble like this in) since dooing this i havent had any problem since . so im not sure weather its due to the dual monitor software or what but seemed to resolv the issue for me .

so i dont know if that will help you any but figured it might be worth a mention anyways , good luck fixing it

Thanks for the tip to try Roach! Unfortunatly it did not work either. I am currently on a computer that uses duel monitors, both with NVIDA graphics cards. I tried switching the primary and secondary status of the montiors. Still no go.

Another odd thing about this bug is that when I go into appearance mode, I can see my actual outfits. As can others. But as soon as I close the appearance window, I go back to being all black.

Pendari, give this a try. Edit your Appearance, adjust you skin color (changing it by 1 number will work), and click the "Save All" button.

Ok. Tried that just now Dan. It made it worse. I adjusted my skin by 1 in the pigment (from 36 to 37) and did a save all. Now even my face is solid black (whereas before my head was still normal for my avatar). I tried relogging also just to see if that may kick it into working, but it didn't. Thank you for trying to help though!

Updated the drivers for the Nvidia on this computer. Still no change. Though I'm still black on my face now as well. This is such an odd problem!

Ok, tried some variations of Dan's tip, and finally got my avatar looking normal again.. YAY!!

BUT, hehe.. The day before the fix and even now still after the fix, my avatar is going invisible every few minutes except the attachments. I become invisible to myself, and everyone around me becomes invisible too (again except for attachments). The only thing that helps is rebooting, but as it always happens again in just a few minutes, this solution is just too much.

Any tips on what may be causing this new issue?

Nevermind.. I"m now back to being all Black AND Invisible.. worst part is, I lost my kitty tail.. I quit..

oh.. and by the way.. I can no longer get sound either.. SL is seriously trying to wipe me out of existance.. that hurts man!

Yay! Got Sound back.. but.. now I'm all black again. *sigh*

I also have this problem. Laptop with dual monitor setup.

Up til recently, I had to log in with another computer every time I wanted to change looks or outfit, and save it there.

The change skin color with 1 in either direction worked fine, for a while though. Not any longer.


But I've found a fix that works for me, hope you can fiddle around and get it working for you too:

I run in windowed mode. What I have to do is to move SL over to the LCD monitor when I change outfit, and save. Then I can drag SL over to the big monitor again, and all is fine. At one point I had to change to full screen on the LCD, but now it works both windowed and fullscreen. I'm quite sure it didn't just a week or two ago.

It seems to me like the appearance part is just working on one of the monitors.
