When I first log on to SL, I can hear the sounds in the game. Within 5 minutes of playing the game (sometimes within 30 seconds) I can't hear any sounds from the game. Althought it's not a huge issue, there have been times when I've found it very frustrating. The speakers are on, and the system volume is up. I've checked all options within the game, and they all seem to be in the correct positions. Since the sound goes away automatically without me changing any of the settings, I'm confused. Can someone please help? Thanks, Sunnee

make sure you have the current drivers for your card.

I have the same problem and Misnomer's response is about the best (being the only) response I've got. Helpful as it almost was, updating drivers did nothing for me.
I've more or less given up logging in, now, and I'm regretting my subscription more with every passing minute of silence.

I have the same problem. Sometimes the sound lasts longer than other times, or it may just start working briefly. I almost always hear wind while playing. After hearing some of the uploaded sounds people use, sometimes I am glad I have sound issues

If you've already tried updating the drivers for your sound card as well as downloading and installing the latest version of DirectX, send an email to support@secondlife.com which includes the brand and model of sound card you're using to play Second Life.
We're working to correct this problem, and it would helpful to know who's having problem with which cards.

Hey, Sunnee -
We have known problems with DirectSound locking up and refusing to release buffers back to us (I don't know the exact details, but I believe the issue is that we query DirectSound to see if a buffer is done playing, and it never says "yes" for many sounds, usually UI sounds.)
We've got something that appears to fix this in the works - I believe that it's going to be going into the 1.1 release, but I don't know the exact details of it...
In the meantime, hopefully upgrading your drivers will help. I THINK that this issue is more prevalent with the Dell Sound Blasters, which are actually based on a different chip than OEM/Retail Sound Blasters...

I have this same issue as noted about, and I don't have a Dell. My Creative Live! card came off the shelf at Fry's
