I have had similar problems after installing an ATI 3850.

I just tried to change different properties in graphics options of the viewer and the graphics adapter (try and error *g).
Now at least it works but I still have artifacts, really annoying.

I'm having the exact same problem. Using a 7600 here. In fact my partner is having the same problem also, with the same video card.

Any ideas?

Ok, I've fixed this on my system at least. :)

I removed my nVIDIA drivers using Add/Remove Programs, then installed the *older* drivers "Forceware XP32 163.75". These were the drivers out in early November 2007, I think. I'm not sure where you can download them now (I had them saved), you can likely find them through Google. Practice good net sense and virus scan any files you download.

So the solution, for me anyway, was to roll back my Forceware drivers to 163.75

Using a 7600 GT, Win XP (32).

As a side note, Forceware 169.28 Beta drives didn't help the problem.

With the this fixed I still had to follow the instructions here to get my Avatar looking right again. https://support.secondlife.com/ics/support/KBAnswer.asp?questionID=4320 (Rebaking Textures)

Hope this helps!

This is a known issue with the 169 series of nvidia drivers, they dropped support in OpenGL for some of the shaders SL uses, they are favouring DirectX development over OpenGL.

I was looking for an answer as to which are the latest drivers that do still work, Rynn says the 163 series, so I will try those and post back.

A word of warning: ALWAYS uninstall your old nVidia drivers and reboot before installing new ones!
