Everthing about this "game" is about work this ..work that. Go out and have some fun for once. This game has turned into a business and not a game. what happend to "this is just for fun" ? Get back to basics and have some fun....Go hug a tree. :D

What?!

With the sheer number of parties that happen every HOUR?! Hell, I code just to stay AWAY from the 'fun'.

If Second Life is work, then it's the most enjoyable work I've ever come across. :D

Heck, I'm actually trying to learn skills I'd have little patience for most other ways, like scripting and texture work!

Bah! In SL, I am retired. I was never an agressive seller of goods, but I gave it all up awhile ago. No more worrying about where to sell, keeping up with sales inventories, or helping people with their purchases. I almost always have time for anyone that wants my attention. I do get busy sometimes, but work is never the excuse for not spending time with someone.

With that said, work often drives people to do what they do. I love Mentoring and I do that a lot, but it never feels like work to me. I work at adding features to my land. Im currently working on my little tavern and fixing up the cove. But, I do it slowly and when I feel like it. Im never pressured to produce. If someone needs my help or wants to show me something they have made, I can almost always easily drop what I am doing and go visit someone.

Many would be lost without their work. Making clothes, building planes, or being a landlord is fun for many. There is nothing wrong with that. It is only a problem when it starts to feel like a chore. So, enjoy what you do, but make time to explore and find new ways to spend your time. Go visit an old friend and see what they are up too, hopefully they wont be too busy working to enjoy the visit. ;)

Work? Try Sims Online, where you actually DO have to sit there and watch your character go to work!! In a game you are paying USD to play!

In SL you get paid your L$ just for being outgoing and meeting new people (ratings mean bonus) :D

Loki, whats the 401k like? do you get medicare and Second Security and all that? caaause.. Im ready to retire too, Im too much of a grumpy old man in SL.

Personally I *LIKE* "working" and of course by working I mean "doing things". "Doing things" prevents one from "doing nothing" doing nothing is a contrary state of existance, either build things, or destroy things (or build things to destroy other things) just dont be stagnant.

I script because I love it, I buy land because I love what my friends build on it, I make poses because I love playing around with Poser. Yes, there are times when I get frustrated and it seems like too much "work", but I feel the same way when I'm playing my guitar too. And frankly, given the lag we've had lately, parties seem like too much "WORK" to me!

Yes, there is work involved, but to me it is theraputic work. I love being the developer/operator of malls (I have 5 now!). I do take time to explore and socialize as well, but its the thrill of developing something that everyone will see and use that floats my boat.

I like to script; i pretend it's a job with stress but it really isn't if i don't want to finish a project it gets mothballed with all the others. I live off a single store (shameless plug: in Ubi at about 40, 50 give or take 20 meters), my 50 L$ stypend and my ratings. I don't own land, don't really need it; scripts don't don't require it; just need a quite place to work. When i'm not scripting i'm lurking about somewhere or herasing the Lindens with obscure bugs. I don't build as much as i would like to. If all my major script projects were finished and i would buy a sim. *floats off into dream land*

I guess that makes me retired too; i haven't made a new product in a good while. maybe i'll tinker with the toys in cold storage and see what could be hawked.

SL is not too work oriented. What SL has become is rumor, conjecture, innuendo and machination oriented. Which is not a good thing.

Just allow me to build my malls for people (I now have 6!) and stop bothering me with all of these conspiracy theories! Too much "work" is created in trying to shut them out!

Well just for the chance to throw my 2 cents in:

As a computer consultant, Network & Systems' Admin, I come to SL to "play!"

I don't model, script, texture, DJ, make clothes, sell, or service anything!!!

The only downside is that I have to actually buy Lindens once in a while. (No big deal, I am not starving)

From a business perspective, I am probably the Lindens' worst customer, I paid my one time, annual membership fee, and I have probably gotten 10 x the value, in fun time, for that actual dollar value.

Hell, I don't even own land! I log in, hang with friends, go shopping, check out the sights, and go to clubs.

This is "truly" all I want out of SL, and If there was any possible way I could make my RL like that, you had damn well better believe that I would!

Completely slacking!

Actually, even the $10 lifetime accounts are helpful in the economy, if not directly.

If you're buying more linden dollars, I assume you're purchasing "stuff". well, that "stuff" is made by your fellow players, who put time and effort to make the "stuff". When you pay for an object, you're paying for the time effort to make the "Stuff".

Then, when the maker of the objects gets enough lindens, they can sell it on GOM, and hence get more money. And I bet you that most folks, upon receiving money for their hard work in SL, merely re-invest it into the game. Meaning, going to linden labs.

So it's not all bad. :)

That's pretty clever. :)

I wonder if this game has taught anyone valuable job skills about the economy? I could see an Anya-type (of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame) being intrigued by such a virtual world and learning to "cash in" so loveably.

It has taught me that real world marketing rules apply in SL. SL is just the manifestation of dreams of the real world. A mirror. Which has presented an interesting way to test marketing theories...
