Hi folks,
I read in the ATI thread, that there have been problems with their drivers and second life. Reading the posts, it didn't seem that these problems made the game unplayable, just annoying at times.
I literally can't play if there are are more than 2-3 houses around. All the polygons start blinking in alternating, very bright, colors. I literally can't look at the screen for more than 20 seconds or so...and have to quit.
I have an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro card in my system. I tried making the cache less than 512, specifying my board as 64K instead of 128K, disabling AGP...all to no avail.
I really don't want to abandon the game, but have no choice at the moment. Are there any experimental drivers that are known to solve the issue; I know Omega makes some.
Any suggestions are surely appreciated. Thanks.

The most important options to try turning off are those related to bump-mapping and avatar vertex programs - maks sure all of those are turned off.
If that doesn't help, it may be that you also need to update the AGP drivers for your motherboard. There's information about what that means and how to do that in the Knowledge Base.
I don't believe that any of the experimental Omega drivers will do you any good right now - as far as I know, they don't contain any of the bug fixes that ATI has made for us yet...

um okay there is another issue with some cards thats very case by case dependant.. heat.
When the cards start to overheat you can get happyfundiscopolygonPARTEE
one thing to try out is if yer flashin the wazoo colors all over the world.. take off yer case cover, or up some fan speeds... you may be havin overall case ventilation issues or yer card fan may be inadequate/underperforming

Hmm. Strangeness. Well, I'm running an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro on an ASUS A7N8X-E with an Athlon XP 3200+, WinXP (latest/patched), and the 2/15/04 ATI Catylyst drivers. My ATI problems do not include what you describe at all, so what you are experiencing is not universal to 9800 Pros and SL. What I have happen is a lockup on windowed SL minimize (it's like Russian roulette) and mysterious client crashes that seem to either occur frequently or not at all. Then there's the occasional texture corruption of large textures when viewed at certain up-close angles. I think the suggestions to check the AGP drivers, reduce the advanced detail features (e.g.: ones that require reboots) are very sound. Beyond that, making sure that the usual suspects are accounted for (power consumption and heat production are maximized while SL is running) are probably not a bad plan. Otherwise, well, some fixes are in the queue waiting to get out.

Cuff-
Second Life also prefers your OpenGL settings in the ATI preferences to have Anti-aliasing set to App Preference and Anisotropic filtering to Off. If you've got custom settings that could also be a cause.
