Ok to start off I think I know why Peter didn't want to give me an account... I post too much! #1 Ok yesterday I changed my house... (this post could be in scripting aswell... but what the heck) Ok I made a garage door with a button and 2 lights. One light is red and the other is green (red is on by default). So when you hit the red BUTTON, it llSay(20,"open" and the 2 lights + the garage door are listening for that command. So when the button says "open" it makes the door open and the red light turn black and the green light turn green. Ok got it? I have 2 of these "panels" one outside and the other inside. So that makes 5 llListen scripts running at the same time. So when I noticed my fps went down from 15-25 to about 9. Is this because of all those scripts? or is it just because that at the time it was like 1PST (3 hours after "no log in time" and that Charlie (full of scripts came to visit me)? Charlie cam to see my work and then the Sim (when I noticed) just dropped FPS and never recovered, even when Charlie left... Any idea what causes this?

lagging and fps
01-08-2003 11:36
This is a good topic, lag.
I had the worst lag night I have ever had last night, until closing time, when it all disappeared, poof, like magic. After that I was fine. I was for the most part around Charlie all night, even when I stopped lagging.
What sim were you on Nexus? We were on Tehama.
Is the lag due to too many scripts running? Some sort of db backup in the background?
I usually do not suffer from too much lag, then again I don't have a T1 or anything like that...

What I have experienced...
01-08-2003 11:37
I don't believe listen is a high process function...
The rose I created had about 30 scripts, one on each pedal, all listening at the same time, so I doubt 5 would effect your system. I tried to make a dozen once but ran out of money then the server crashed and I lost it all. I sold my house and made a giant bear... thanks Nash for bringing up old painful memories.

pedantics
01-10-2003 14:19
Sorry to be pedantic... just trying to understand so I can help...
I actually looked up the word "lag" to see it it was being used correctly in this thread. Turns out it is. "Lag" can mean "comparative slowness or retardation" so it can be applied to the client rendering FPS as well as network connectivity and server response.
Sometimes a post to the forums doesn't resolve the ambiguity of how "lag" is being used, which makes it a little difficult to provide a proper response. Nevertheless, I try...
Now, to try to address some of the problems below...
(1) Low simulator FPS... we're aware of the really low server frame-rate that Nexus Nash was talking about in the first post. This can be caused by a variety of things, but currently the most mysterious is too much computation being spent in a stat called "Run Agents". We're working on it, and I expect we'll have a fix by this month's release.
Only five or so listening scripts shouldn't hurt a sim's FPS too bad. Back when I was working on the dance hall's MixMaster I noticed only slight sim performance drop when all 60 or 80 of my scripted objects were receiving chat messages at once.
(2) Bad network connection... Fenik's comment about his T1 is only relevant to "lag" in network connection. This manifests itself in low updates for objects, causing them to overshoot or undershoot their real positions on the server, causing apparent interpenetrations that aren't real, and sometimes jerky motion of objects that colliding alot. This kind of "lag" sometimes correlates with long ping-times and sometimes packet loss.
Somtimes it is difficult to distinguish (2) from (1) without looking at the stats.
(3) Bad client video FPS... Sometimes bad rendering FPS is called "lag". Everybody knows what low FPS looks like, and it sucks, but what can be more objectionable is inconsistent FPS. Sometimes the average could be 15 to 30 FPS, but when mixed with occasional frames that last for more than 1/10th of a second can appear especially "laggy" and can be easily mistaken for server "lag" varieties (1) and (2).
I've seen my own render frame rate drop below 10 in areas where it should be higher. This is often after being logged on for hours at a time. When I log out and back in I find my frame rate is back up to about 30 FPS. I believe that Doug has been fixing some bugs that should make the client more stable, and may help reduce the deterioration of client performance. These bug fixes should be in the next big release.

Cool! Thx Andrew! I'm not as lucky as the ones here who have a T1... but I wish! Who supports T1? or higher? And how much are you guys paying, what kind of DL/UL do you get? I really wanna switch from Cable to better!

network connections

Thanks for the explanation, the bad network connection did just happen to me recently, but after my other post. It was very weird to see for sure. And feniks = her fen-

Here is the specs I saw from one provider (speeds in mega bits):
T-1 - 1.544 mb/s (24 DS0 lines) Ave. cost $700.-$950./mo. T-3 - 43.232 mb/s (28 T1s) Ave. cost $10,000.-$18,000./mo. OC-3 - 155 mb/s (100 T1s) Ave. cost $32,000.-$49,000./mo. OC-12 - 622 mb/s (4 OC3s) no estimated price available OC-48 - 2.5 mb/s (4 OC12s) no estimated price available OC-192 - 9.6 mb/s (4 OC48s) no estimated price available

1.9mb
01-12-2003 09:21
I get 1.9 mb on my cable for $40 a month. What would be the advantage of a T1?
For anyone interested, there's a button at the bottom of my home page called 'bandwidth test'. It will tell you what speed you're getting.
There's also a link to the Internet Traffic Report, which can tell you when there are problems in your area. What's helpful is to trace the connections you're using from you to SL. Then with the Internet Traffic Report, when you're lagging, you can see if maybe something's bogged down along the way.

The ony difference is probably t1 can really download at 1.544mb/s while when I ahd cable, the maximum I could download at was roughly 500kb/s. Also, T1 has high upload speed, so its good for game servers and stuff like that.

If you live in Shelton. WA - which is a slightly hicky town in western washington, they have laid down fiber through the entire town and claim they can provide you with 1000 mbps speeds for $40/month. and yes, there are 3 zeros and no decimal points - that is one thousand megabytes per second. of course in that case, I think you will be limmetid by the bandwidth of everyone else.

LOL BBC! 1000mbps is not megabytes it's mega bits per second. 8bits in a byte so 125MEGAbytes a second. But the line at my place is the same only..... I get capped at 150k\sec! So they will probably end up capping you guys to like 1meg\sec BIG MAX! If not... i'll mail you my end of the cable so you can hook it up to yours!

ok, so 125 Mb/s - look at pat murphy's graph, thats around a 30k a month bandwidth fee for $40/ month. I browsed the various providers sites - they had caps on monthly Bandwidth - 5 gigs and such , but no per sec cap. to bad I don't live there, my grandma does, maybe you can send her your cable, but be nice, she's an old lady who is only halfway through snow crash. look for yousrself retailers BBC
