Well I decided to shell out for a brand new ATI Radeon HD4870 512MB. For those not keeping up with hardware standards: it's one of the most powerful cards ATI has on offer (at the moment) and it easily beats the 8800GT and even the 8800GTX.
Anyway, I installed it, tested it with several games and discovered good performance. But then, when I decided to try Second Life I got an error that my graphics card was not supported. Well, fine, it's probably not added to their list of possible detectable cards, but I DID expect it to perform well but I only get 20fps when I'm on land and not even in busy or detailed areas! My 8800GTS 640Mb is a great deal weaker yet can pull twice that fps easily! WITH anti aliasing on to boot!
Also, I'm getting some odd flickering when it comes to items with "glow" on them
So, basically, is anyone else having this problem? Or does anyone know of a possible fix? I am using the latest client and latest drivers for my graphics card.

/111/82/268338/1.htmlThat thread might have some info. You might do a forum search for 4870 and also check the issue tracker for 4870 and hd4870.

Thanks for the link - it seems some can still get it to run. It seems Linden still has some patching to do. Oddly enough, the framerate sticks at 20 even if I increase all detail to max, use 8x Anti Aliasing, etc. so it must be something else causing the slow down.
