Hey everyone ... I've had the worst time with creating SL movies lol. They usually go extremely fast or are extremely choppy. I've used the recommendations when they had the movie contest a while back where you resize your screen to a smaller size , etc .. but still couldn't produce a watchable movie.
I've seen some awesome movies and was curious exactly which codec you use and possibly what video editing software is recommended?

I believe the problem with speed is that the codecs you can choose from don't catch 30fps.
I usually record in uncompressed frames, although this creates huge files, and if you aren't careful you can go over 2gb which is an issue for the movie files (causes corruption). I think that's maybe a minute or two of video max to get to 2gb. Usually I try to keep track of time and just quickly toggle the video to create a new clip.
Other people use FRAPS, sorry I don't have the link to it, because it also records audio. But it also records the entire screen (so UI for SL, UI for Windows), but I'm sure there are ways around it (I have not used FRAPS)
There was a thread about this a bit back, I believe started by Lordfly Digeridoo, if you want to search.

FRAPS is at fraps.com. the free version does not capture audio, but you may be able to capture audio with Windows sound recorder and mix it later.
you can avoid recording the menu by making your SL window 640x480, then resizing it up a bit to something like 640x520. Fraps will just record the middle 640x480.
