Twice in the last month we've had our internet capped due to the download amount. The only thing I have running on my pc is Second Life. Yesterday, according to the usage report, I downloaded 3.06GB. My wife uses SL too and only uses this amount in a week!!
My computer runs Vista and hers runs XP. Our preferences are set the same in-world and we both use the same router. We've phoned our ISP helpline (thats what they call themselves anyway) and they told me to get in touch with someone on here to see if they could help as they have absolutely no idea at their end, the only suggestion they came up with was the media streaming, but my wife and I usually go to the same places and she spends more time in SL than I do!!
Even today I've only been on for an hour and its used 709mb (sent & received).
Can someone please help as I really dont want to give up my home, friends and job on SL.
Thank you in advance.

Turning off streaming media will probably help more than anything else. Dropping your draw distance may also help some, as will not TPing around as much or doing cache clears unless you have a reason to..

edit: the streaming media stuff can be turned on in the Preferences window, on the "Audio & Video" tab.

Do you have wireless? If you do, is it secure? Someome else may be using your internet connection.

If not, something else on your computer may be eating up bandwidth. Leave it on for a while with nothing running and see what happens.

As the last poster suggests check your router logs and see how many computers are connecting through your router. Also run a virus scanner and spy bot. 3gigs a day seems a little much. Maybe max your cache setting so you are not re-downloading everything.

I'm going to hazard to guess that you're on Comcast. That's probably a mistake if you want to use SL or do much of any streaming. Similiary, I wonder how long until Cricket gets nailed for deceptive advertising, by promoting unlimited internet but imposing a 5GB per month cap deep in the fine print.

If you want to use SL, prepare to hit the cap regularly, or switch to another provider that means unlimited when they say unlimited. Qwest DSL and Verizon FiOS both fall into this category.

A better approach would be to use firmware on your router that allows you to see the bandwidth usage. Googling for tomato or dd-wrt should find good examples. Tomato is simple and good enough for most users, dd-wrt is great for advanced users.

I use Comcast with no issues. I use it for SL and a few other online games and movies ect...

This is an e-mail I got a few months ago. SL should not use 3gigs a day. I have been on over 12 hours a day for the last few weeks and go to several new places and go nowhere near that much. I have downloaded 20 gigs a few days in a row outside SL and still have never been capped or even throttled down.

Verizon still maintains unlimited as said but I would not bet on that lasting.

Dear Comcast High-Speed Internet Customer,

We appreciate your business and strive to provide you with the best online experience possible. One of the ways we do this is through our Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). The AUP outlines acceptable use of our service as well as steps we take to protect our customers from things that can negatively impact their experience online. This policy has been in place for many years and we update it periodically to keep it current with our customers' use of our service.

On October 1, 2008, we will post an updated AUP that will go into effect at that time.

In the updated AUP, we clarify that monthly data (or bandwidth) usage of more than 250 Gigabytes (GB) is the specific threshold that defines excessive use of our service. We have an excessive use policy because a fraction of one percent of our customers use such a disproportionate amount of bandwidth every month that they may degrade the online experience of other customers.

250 GB/month is an extremely large amount of bandwidth and it's very likely that your monthly data usage doesn't even come close to that amount. In fact, the threshold is approximately 100 times greater than the typical or median residential customer usage, which is 2 to 3 GB/month. To put it in perspective, to reach 250 GB of data usage in one month a customer would have to do any one of the following:

* Send more than 50 million plain text emails (at 5 KB/email);
* Download 62,500 songs (at 4 MB/song); or
* Download 125 standard definition movies (at 2 GB/movie).

And online gamers should know that even the heaviest multi- or single-player gaming activity would not typically come close to this threshold over the course of a month.

The liberal use of the word Unlimited, is at best a lie. Its a misrepresentation of what the word actually means.

'Fair Usage' seems to redefine the word, in almost 99% of ISP small print.

I used to have a webhost that declared unlimited bandwidth available, when in reality it would struggle to show text off a webpage, let alone anything else. The catch is, they have say 100mbps connections to each server hosting 2,000+ websites, linked to a all the other router nodes to each of their servers, linked to a pipeline connection to the backbone, probably through another third party. All the interleaving in a reality meant that you barely got allocated a minimum of 20kbps at average times.
