Linux with Cedega

I tried installing the game with Cedega yesterday and after running it all it produces is a blank black screen and I have to force out of X to get back.

I really can't figure out how to get it to work, does anyone have per chance that old script and hacked version of WineX that someone made that downloads and installs SL automaticly and is preconfigured for it? All the posts that lead to it give me some sort of "permission denied" when trying to get to the post and it looks like the guy that made it doesn't have it uploaded anymore.

Help is appreciated, thanks.

Cedega doesnt work (in more ways than one.), but Flipper[?] has a pre-edited version of the WineX 3.2 source that runs SL fine. :)

Heh - we used to have a 300 page Linux thread, that got wiped with the forum move. It was linked there. Hrrm, I'll have a look if I still have the tar somewhere.

On my home web server -- 256kbps upstream aDSL:

statspage.dyndns.org/~mark/SecondLifeLinux.tar.gz

With the changes made for the 1.5.8 installer, it's a pain to install SL now. The "temp" directory needs to be VFAT-formatted, and sometimes it doesn't work even then.

I just installed SL (1.5.13) using point2play and didn't recieve any errors. When i try to run SL i get a black screen and have to reload x11. I will try that custom version of wine.

Did you get that to work with the custom Wine? I just installed the latest Wine and then Second Life and I'm being bugged about trying to run fullscreen instead of a window. How do I force SL to start up in Window mode if I can't get to the preferences to set it up there?

Did either of you, or anybody else get any where with this? I've been trying unsuccessfully to get sl working in linux today too.... lots of black screen, end up rebooting :(

I gave up. I think I was close many times, but I kept getting an error from Second Life saying it couldn't go full screen. With no way to force it into windowed mode, I couldn't get past that hurdle.

I got it working with point2play/cedega this morning. In point2play I installed the latest cedega version (4.2.1) and used 'Get Another Version' to install WineX 3.2 (no custom builds for me, I only started using Linux a week ago ;) ).

I ran the sl installer with cedega 4.2.1 set as the default, then ran sl itself with winex 3.2 set as default (see pic). The only option i changed in configure, was 'winver' which I changed to win2k.

So hopefully now a little less rebooting to play SL for me :)

Been playing SL on XP for some time now and do Solaris at work.

Figured I'd finally get it running on Unix and play w/performance tuning.

Thread rating (and as Merwan might say,) Excellent!

Hail from Linux (again.)

I got the black screen problem on another pc too (running Suse 9.2, cedega 4.2.1 for install, winex 3.2 for the game). Solved it this time by setting the desktop to 24bit, and enabling a few resolutions for 24bit color in SaX2.

I tried the same thing (Cedega 4.2.1, Point2Play, etc), ATI Radeon 9600 XT with the newest drivers from ATI.

The game installs fine with Cedega 4.2.1.
But when I try to run it (with Wine 3.2) it complains about 32 bits per pixel needed, but I can only set my X server to 24 bpp.

Any ideas?

EDIT: Tried going into ~/.point2play wine dirs and editting config and setting the color depth to 32, but still getting the same error.

The way mine is set up is I installed through Cedega 4.x and I'm playing it using a WineX 3.3.1 CVS snapshop packaged in an RPM under Fedora Core 3. I believe one is available from here . Watch out though, the winex cvs conflicts with regular wine so you might lose the ability to run some previously wine-able software.

Sure wish they'd release a Linux client so we could eliminate this pain the rear.

There should be a way, on Windows, to find out where the Window mode is set (such as in .ini or other config file or the registry), and manually change that in the Linux installation.

I'd very much like to see SL runnable on Linux (although I don't have Linux installed now), so I'm interested to know if anyone can get this to work.

It appears to be in the "settings.ini" file: a setting called "FullScreen". Based on my tests, a value of "FALSE" means show windowed, while "TRUE" or absent means show full-screen.

SL in Cedega Working
06-23-2005 10:31
Here's my config, and it is working as I type this:

Platform: Fedora Core 3 updated to current, NVidia GeForce FX5200, SB Live!

Download and install Point2Play 2.0.1 RPM (yes, needs a subscription)
From Point2Play, download Cedega 4.3.2 and support packs as the default emulator version to use
Then download WineX 3.2 from the "Download older versions" menu, but do not make it the default version.

Use Point2Play 2.0.1 to install SL 1.6.7+ using Cedega 4.3.2.
Once its installed, do NOT run it yet.

Edit the installed SL profile in Point2Play to tell Point2Play to start SL with WineX 3.2 instead.
I have also set SL to run in a Desktop window... rather than grabbing the full screen. That may help for people having X lockup problems.

Once SL is installed with 4.3.2 and set to run using WineX 3.2, fire it up.
I was able to login first time.

The most annoying thing I have seen is this console message:
WARNING Mixing AGP and non-AGP pools, slow!

And I will figure that out later. I am just glad its working.

I had to add
DefaultFbBPP 32
DefaultDepth 24

In the "Screen" block of my xorg.conf
Note: I have an NVidia GeForce FX5200 and I am using NVidia's drivers with it.
Not sure if the DefaultFbBPP parameter will work with ATI

If Darwin BSD, why not Linux
06-24-2005 14:14
If there is Mac version of the client, I presum that it is on OSX and thus, running under BSD, ala, Darwin. If it can run under BSD, why can't it run under Linux?
