Zero Audio on System while SL Runs

Hello all, I seem to be having quite the peculiar issue with SL.

It seems that whenever I have Second Life running, all the audio on my system becomes muted - without even being muted. Second Life produces no sound, nor will any other program on my computer. As soon as Second Life has been exited out, my sound will "magically" work again, with no ill effects. I'm completely stumped as to the problem with this issue, as it only occurs with Second Life. My PC specs are as follows, in the event they may be of some help in solving this issue:

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L
CPU: Intel Celeron Dual-Core E2180 (2.0GHz)
RAM: 4GB DDR2 800 Mushkin RAM
GPU: XFX nVidia 8800GT 512mb DDR3 VRAM
PSU: Corsair 520w Modular Power Supply
Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 4

If there's some way of modifying a configuration file to force usage of a specific device, please let me know - because I think that is the issue here.

Hi Deliss, welcome to the forums!

SL uses whatever the default device for the system is. There may be a config parameter, but I have never heard of anyone having to use it.

I had similar weirdness with a new computer, then discovered that no one had ever installed the driver for the actual sound chip. The default Microsoft driver was good enough for most purposes, but SL (and Skype) just didn't work. You might update your sound driver with a new one from Creative's website.

The driver for my soundcard was updated to the latest driver version before I even installed Second Life, and I still have the issue.

After doing a little searching on the boards here, I've come to find out that most Sound Blaster users are having a similar issue, with no fix in sight yet. I'm surprised I haven't even seen this issue on the Bug Tracker - either SL is unaware of this problem or they refuse to address it.

Found an interesting little tidbit of information while trying out different viewers to see if they'd work.

Nicholaz viewer, I found this in the log it creates.

2008-04-17T18:53:29Z WARNING: LLAudioEngine_FMOD::init: Error : You are using the wrong FMOD version (3.74)! You should be using FMOD 3.75

Could an improper FMOD version cause an audio conflict, thusly rendering all audio on the system null until the program using it terminates?

Another Update. Tried out a different viewer, RealXtend. I got sound! But horrible, horrible framerate skippage (which is odd, since my Graphics Card is an 8800GT...). The primary difference between the two, in terms of audio, is that whereas the Second Life viewer uses FMOD, RealXtend uses OpenAL. So apparently it's not SL that doesn't get along with my system, but rather FMOD.

So does anyone know of any way of getting OpenAL to work with the default SL client?

https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-2955
From: someone
1) Open the Sounds and Audio Devices control panel.
2) Select the "Audio" tab
3) In the "Sound Playback" section, select your audio device (in my case "SB Audigy Audio [C800]";) then hit the "advanced" button
4) Select the "Performance" tab
5) Change the hardware acceleration from "Full" to the next lower option (Standard acceleration, enables only standard DirecSound acceleration features).
6) Sekect ok and close the rest of the windows.

You're welcome.

I think I found that in the jira system by searching for Soundblaster.

Guess i was lucky then, i used sblive - audigy 2 & 4 , never had a muted sound problem in SL either on vista or xp , i have read about this "fix" from creative instead of them fixing their drivers tho.

Funny how Creative reacted when someone made a better driver for their soundcard, going "bad person! youre not allowed to do that", then reactions fromt their userbase totally made them flip around and suddely welcome people to improve their drivers.

Creative drivers are really slacking behind.
