New 64-Bit System; Tons of Graphic Issues/Anomolies

I just finished putting together my brand new computer today;

amd phemon II quad core 3.2ghz
ati radeon hd 4870
6gb ram

The first thing I did was install all the drivers, then Second Life. Second life runs quick, things load + render insanely fast. However, I have so many graphic issues + anomolies, it's so obnoxious to play it. Random shapes, spikes, lines running across the screen, odd huge blocks and shapes coming off of players and random areas around the world. Just, the whole thing is a mess.

Everything is running like a charm; all of my drivers are up to date including video drivers, it runs with insane speed, my cpu is only 20% busy, all my temps are beyond cold [there's 5 fans in it].

I checked out the recommended + min specs for SL, and noticed that there are no new cards listed. Is it possible to have too good of a card for this?

Thanks so much for any input.

Edit: I should also mention that even if my graphics are so screwed up, I have not crashed once, and I have been on for hours.

I think you need to turn off "Enable VBO" in Preferences > Graphics > Hardware Options

I wouldn't blame the 64-bit hardware just yet. (^_^)

CPU: AMD (FX-74) (3000 MHz)
Memory: 8192 MB
OS Version: Professional (Build 7100)
Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
Graphics Card: GeForce 8600 GT/PCI/SSE2
OpenGL Version: 3.0.0

I'm running Windows7x64 completely trouble free. What I have found out on my part is that I had to rely on some off-version Nvidia drivers for SL to run right. With the drivers supplied directly from the Forceware site I was getting glitches and crashes. (^_^)

ATI and SL have a pretty shaky reputation... There are some debug settings you can play with. I'm sure some people here know them, but, this Nvidia-head can only say that your 64-bit hardware ain't the problem. (^_^)y

I was having the exact same issue (vista 64, ATI Radeon HD 4870). Turning off VBO fixed it up beautifully for me as well.

Ahhhh.... so much better. ;)

The clients, when newly installed, do a check for your graphics card and then set your graphics level based on the check. Why do the LL engineers miss this chronic problem for ATI users, that is, why doesn't the client check for ATI card and turn off the VBO buggers?

Oh, right. I remember now.

They really need to fix the client to automatically disable VBO's whenever ATI hardware is detected. This question comes up almost every day.

In SL, ATI + VBO = trouble, almost always.

Actually ATi need to fix their sucky drivers...think your 4870/4890 rocks...it sure won't in openGL app's it'll be outclassed by an Nvidia 9600GT ...how poor is that?
Ati and Second Life are historically a disaster,Ati and OpenGL too.
Like to see high fps in SL....fast cpu and a midrange Nvidia card. Intel q9550/AMD 940/955 ideal....Nvidia 9800 or better . Best place to locate any Ati card is the trash X_X

I made the mistake of switching to an ATI card for my new core i7 setup too.

An ATI HD4850 to be exact. After a while I get horrendous massive broken triangles all over the screen, almost as if the graphics card was overheating or something, yet the temperature readout says 56C (They're designed to go up to 100C+!). So its not a temp issue.

Btw, this IS with VBO turned off as well :/
