Can't see symbols in chat

I can't see the symbols (such as musical notes) that many people use in chat gestures. Their appearance varies, but I usually just see either dots or punctuation. I've had this problem for as long as I've been using SL. It just took a long time before I found out that other people saw symbols, lol.

If I copy and paste these symbols from the Second Life chat line to a Word document, I CAN see them correctly. Doesn't this mean I have the font? Why doesn't Second Life display them correctly? Does Second Life display Unicode?

Here is a sample on the next line:

Well, after continuing to search the forums, I found out that I needed to install the "Arial Unicode MS" Windows font. My best friend sent the necessary ARIALUNI.TTF file to me, which I copied to my \Windows\fonts directory.
