things aren't working for me, a newbie

Hello,
I have an AMD Athlon 1400 mhz, 512 ram, 64 mb geforce 2, running XP slower dsl connection (380+)

Anyway, I've been trying to get things working for the past two days and here are my problems:

After about a minute (60 seconds, really!) things kind of freeze (kind of because I can still look around and I didn't realize I was frozen for a long time at first and wasted a lot of time trying to move and talk, but nothing would show, and everyone else was just standing around) when I quit, none of my other internet programs would work (IE, Active worlds, mail) until I restart my dsl connection. Then I can log on to second life and other programs again.

I have never seen myself, although I can see everyone else.

I've been kicked accross the ocean to never never land, only to (now that I think of it) freeze out there, never to be able to return.

Unless the lag is so horrid, I can't move forward when I hit W or anything. Turning is always instantanious and no problem.

I updated all system packs for xp yesterday, and my geforce 2 card as well, so they shouldn't be the problem...... Are you on Direct X 9 now or something?

Please help or let me know what other information I can tell you to help, thanks, Ingie Ah, this seems to fit:

Make sure you have stated the correct amount of video memory in your options. You stated that you had a 64mb GeForce2, I believe most GeForce2 cards were 32mb. I made this mistake with my GeForce3, stating 128mb in options. SL would barely run. When I changed to the correct 64mb I can run the client with pretty decent performance.

Well, it is actually 64, said so on the box :p and on startup, but I'll try lowering it. I won't give up, I wouldn't have started this if I thought it'd be easy. If I'm not around much in the next week or so it's because of the X-mas season, so busy. I'll be back, though, so please don't count me out :)

I've had occasions where I was near the edge of the sim and was flying, and I started to fly off into nothing. I could turn the view, but my avatar wouldn't turn.

And I dont think my problems are due to my machine (Athlon XP 2100+, 512mb ram, Geforce4 4200), but probably connection. If I quit SL and restart, everything is fine.

I know I was having the flying off problem a lot from my home machine of similar power and when I logged and tried to reconnect, I found I couldn't connect to the internet at all for long periods. I finally called my DSL provider SBC and they quickly made an adjustment on their end that cured it.

SBC DSL, eh?

Same here -- I wonder if that could account for any of my issues?

Only difference is, I don't have periods of being unable to connect to anything.

Hmmmmmm......

If you are getting reasonable framerates as you look around (the client is still rendering the old data), then it has nothing to do with your video card. Leave the video memory at the correct setting.

Being able to look around but unable to move looks like a server crash where the crash-notice didn't get to you, however I doubt the server actually crashed... instead I'm guessing your client stopped getting info from the servers.

It probably has something to do with your connection. In the preferences at login, change the following settings:

1. network bandwidth to as low as possible (56 k)

2. display far-clip as low as possible (64 meters)

These will reduce the flow of information on your DSL line. If that allows you to login (be prepared to wait for some of the data/textures to come in), then dial up one and/or the other preference to see where the trouble starts to happen.

Whether it works or not, please repost here and let us know, thanks.

Ok, It's getting late, I'll give it a try really quick and let you know if it helps, and if I can tell when I start having trouble. Funny, I also have SBC, what did you tell them/ what did they say they did??? I might need the same help?? Thanks, I'll be back.... Ingie

Hi again, I got some better results when I decreased my viewing distance. I still have some visual problems. My eyes wouldn't come in, and there is a blue lance running through my middle with a green box there as well. You probably know what it is??? the other people didn't see it.

Anyway, Merry Christmas/happy hollidays to everyone. I'll see you all when they are over!

Love Ingie

PS When you kill someone, does that person lose money or anything like that? Thanks again!

I believe that no matter how you die, the only thing that happens is you are sent back to your home.
