just a quickie - do we still need to set the affinity to one half of the dual core processors or has LL taken care of the problem?

I'm not sure what problem you're referring to. I've been using dual cores and quad cores for years, and SL's always worked just fine on them.

back in 2003-2005 i used a Dual CPU computer for SL and i had to set the affinity for SL to both CPU's in the task manager with windows 2000 if i remember correctly.

That no longer needs to be done. You can however check to make sure "Run Multiple Threads" is selected under the Advanced Menu - Rendering.

You open the Advanced Menu with ALT-Control+Shift+D.

Uh huh..

/me pokes at search..

...EDIT: By the way, Michi you were sooooo right about setting the affinity to a single processor for SL. I'm looking at SL with my jaw on the floor right now, as the stats bar is reporting 80FPS..

:P

But, anyway, like Briana says, this isn't really an issue any more and hasn't been for some time.

Thanks folk, Chosen had me doubting myself for a moment there, so went on a search and found this.
[ I see all these other hints, and yet I don't see something mentioned here that's a major issue: SL is lousy at handling multicore processors. If after all this effort you still get laggy, jerky movement, check the following:

1. Bring up Windows Task manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL)

2. Go to the Process tab.

3. Look for "secondlife.exe" in the list of running processes and right click on it.

4. Select "Set Affinity" This will bring up a grey window with a series of check boxes in it. You'll have one check box per CPU core.

5. Uncheck all but one box. This forces SL to run only in that core.

6. Hit OK

7. Close Task Manager.

See if things run better then. They always do for me. (AMD Athlon Manchester dual core CPU.)

You'll have to do this EVERY TIME you start SL, so keep this set of instructions handy.]

I knew I has seen it somewhere.
So I can stop doing it now then :-)

Don't encourage her... all she was doing was trying to get her rez date in again and hoping no one would flame her for it.... :p

OK, you got me. I'd forgotten. And it was my own thread, no less! Good catch. Thanks for the reminder.

Would it get me out of the dunce corner if I mentioned I only got 4 hours of sleep last night? Nah, I didn't think so. Truth be told, I'm sure I wouldn't have remembered even if I were better rested. Even though I do remember some of the thread, the affinity part still feels like new information. Oh well. I guess I'll never be omnipotent. Cross that one off the to do list.

But yeah, a lot's changed since then. Oh, the memories. The very first question I asked in that thread has a different answer now. SLI does work with dual monitors these days. (But I now use four monitors instead of two, so I'm still out of luck, hahaha.)

LOL. You're not in the dunce corner. If you weren't (nearly) always right, I wouldn't have been so surprised you'd never heard of the affinity stuff..

:)

edit: and, strangely enough, you're about the 10th person I've head say they got no sleep in the last couple days, including mysellf. Grid problems, griefer attacks.. Is the moon full or something? If I believed in such things, I might be wondering about omens and possibly asking chef friends if they could score me some entrails..

This link might have some use: http://www.overclock.net/pc-games/568245-limit-games-one-cpu-core.html

Torley at one time posted a blog article about how to "permanently" set affinity. The link provided in that post is no longer valid. The program mentioned was imagecfg, which i believe is part of windows, at least some versions of windows.
Torley old post is at http://torley.com/home-computermy-new-setup-runs-second-life-really-nicely

Google says there is an old blog post of mine with some info on affinity setting, and lo and behold there is: http://suezannecbaskerville.wordpress.com/2007/12/

My post used info from the KB article at https://support.secondlife.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=4417&task=knowledge&questionID=4205
