Whem I go to the Nvidia website to update my video card driver it tells me to uninstall the old driver first so I do that and my computer becomes unusable and there is no way to install a new driver as nothing works without a video driver. How do you install a new driver when uninstalling the old one makes it impossible to use your computer?

It won't be totally useless. You won't get a blank screen, it will just rely on some built in plug and play windows driver. In the device manager, use the uninstall driver button and remove the driver.

Removing the video driver doesn't disable the computer. It just makes it ugly.
It will most likely default to 800*600, 256 colors, then you install the new drivers and reset it to the normal settings. If you're getting different results, Susie, something is seriously wrong. P2 _____________________

P2 It makes it so ugly I have no way of getting back to the Nvidia website so I do a sysytem restore every time I try it which is yearly. I give up. I must be doing something wrong which is why I posted this in the first place but thank you Phoenix. _____________________

There's not really any amount of ugly that would make it impossible to use. It might be unusable, but that would be because it's doing somthing like just showing diagonal lines, or has contrast too low to read, or something like that.
Could you describe what it looks like more clearly? Could you take a picture of the screen with a camera and show us what it looks like? Can you read it and run a browser and see the start menu? Also, what kind of video card is it and what kind of monitor? Also, if you know anyone convenient in RL that seems appropriate you might ask them to investigate. _____________________

Download the driver to your desktop first, then uninstall, reboot, and install.

have the driver setup running and waiting for you to go, uninstall the old driver, and then finish the installation of the new one.

I have like a screen so huge that all I can see is about 1/10th of my desk top with a few giant icons. I see no way to ever get back to the download again. Speaking of the devil my trusty Nvidia6800 card died last night so I am on my husband's old notebook. _____________________

Right click anywhere on your desktop and (in Vista...........I forget what it is exactly in XP but it's similar) click "personalize" then "display settings". You can change the resolution there. It sounds like your monitor has a fairly large resident resident resolution and Window has given you a screen resolution of something like 640 x 480. Try something like 800 x 600 or maybe 1280 x 1024. That should give you enough screen viewing to find your way around enough to get your new driver installed.

Thanks folks. Once Dell sends me a new 6800 I'll try the suggestions you have all given me.
