Lots of things piling up now. I *DID* connect to the grid, but let me get to that..

I start SL, and I get an error that my sustem does not meet the requriements...

2.97ghz CPU
1gb RAM
128mb VRAM

Wow this game must have VERY strenuous requriements! *rolls eyes*

Once I connect I'm greeted with this:
http://furstar.net/FH_pics/SL_error.jpg

My Avi is nude, it has holes in it and it has a few extraneous parts it shouldn't have (looking almost to me like support wires on a manaquin)

The game is VERY slow, probably like 1-4FPS, so I told it to go into full-screen mode.

SL crashes.

Any suggestions on what is wrong and what to do? (and I dont want to hear "buy a new PC!" that's not an option (though I'm planning to get a new laptop, but is a 2.97ghz processor with 1gb ram is not in-spec, I doubt a laptop will come NEAR it...)

EDIT:
logged back in, Char has clothes on now, but still has holes and additional parts like in original pic, all other problems remain.

How about what kind of graphics card you have?
Driver version?

You didn't say you used linux, but I see KDE in that pic so, what distribution. Try cross-posting this to the linux users forum as well.

Yes, SL has high requirements, but an even bigger problem with the linux version is that even the slightest problem with your configuration can bring it crashing to the ground.

The game does have some requirements that other games do not.......though I would not say the requirements are "strenuous". A reasonably well maintained and updated computer with a modern CPU and a gig of RAM plus a graphics card that supports OpenGL should work. A low end computer with ohboard graphics accellerater will struggle......and may not work at all.

On the surface your computer seems to meet the CPU and RAM requirements. The graphics may be a problem though. Is it a stand alone card or onboard accellerater? Who is the manufacturer of your video card? Are you using the most resent drivers for it? The operating system you are using may be an issue too......if it's XP then the 1 gig of RAM should be plenty. If it's Vista, then you are about half way there......Vista takes nearly a gig just for itself.

Try updating your video drivers, clearing your cache, and setting your draw distance lower. Also try logging into a quiet sim instead of where you are logging into now......try the sim where I live.........Philudoria. It's a quiet sim without a lot of scripts running.

Using the latest version of Kubuntu (kubuntu.org) with KDE v4 running SL through WiNE v1.0 (most recent release) --- for the life of me I couldn't find an executable file in the acctual SL Linux version -_-

GRaphics card is a PCI ATI Radeon 9250.

Using everything as it came in the distro because I've not got the hang of installing under Linux yet...

Better yet, Sargasso. It's a Linden owned void sim.

If you can boot into XP and run the Windows viewer under real Windows instead of WINE, I think that would be the optimal solution for your computer. The Linux viewer is still in Beta, and may be a little flakier than the Windows or Mac viewer.

Otherwise, I'd suggest heading for the Linux forum for help getting that version running on your computer. I believe once you unpack the archive, the Linux executable is a file just called secondlife.

One other thing I would check is your video driver. The ATI Radeon 9250 is a supported card, so SL is not recognizing it properly for some reason. In SL, under the Help menu, check About Second Life and see what kind of video card it thinks you have. Either your card's 3D driver is not set up properly in Linux, or WINE doesn't work right with it.

SL can not run under wine. Use the linux client. You can get it off the normal download page at secondlife.com

The linux client can be better then the windows one at times infact, so don't listen to people who tell you to switch to windows :P

lol! I have a rack-mount HD so I swap between windows and linux as I choose (like now I'm in XP Pro because linux doesnt really like my wifi network and drops a lot) though dont worry, when I get everything set up and running I doubt I'll ever go back to windows unless I have a screwball program or soemthing for a college class that REQUIRES windows to run, period.

the windows client WILL NOT run. I spent many days trying to get it to work in a different thread. the 9250 is NOT compatable with the new SL version using the newest ATI drivers, nor the Omega drivers. (and omega screws up other programs like WoW) it just crashes and lightsmark says my card is not openGL 2.0 compatable...

Didn't realize there even WAS a linux forum, and the isntall instructions seem to say soemthign about compiling the executable, which is still beyond me (I'm still fighting to get RPMs and DEBs to work right) I'll check though, thanks

the linux client is the easiest thing ever

download
uncompress to a folder on your desktop
dbl click the secondlife file

ive ran it like that with redhat, mandrake slackware and now ubuntu, the worst was mandrake where i had to open a terminal goto the folder and ./secondlife

Yeah, turns out I had a corrupt download (18mb instead of 55mb!!!) I now have the client but it refuses to run, claiming there was a bad shutdown previously....

whew! got that solved by chmod-ing the files... now I get a wall of text before the crash -_- anyone interested cna go look at my thread on the linux board, posting so much linux technobabble on here would probably be considered spamming...
