I am so desperate, i bought a laptop at christmas so i could play sl while at work lol yes i work hard. Anyway there is no phone connection at my work so i got an aircard from a mobile communications company it's the 3g watcher 875U, supposed to be high speed internet and they assured me it would be compatible with online gaming, but alas it isn't. i managed to download SL with it took 6 hours mind lol. I can log on but my ave doesnt rez for about 20 mins nor do the surroundings till i have been standing still for about an hour. soooo frustrating. and obviously i cant move either. stangly my AO works fine and i can edit pre existing prims, just cant rezz new ones lol. so when i come online I just stand there waiting to rezz for 3 hours while my friends party around me, i can't see them or hear music or voice so cant do anything but IM, pretty useless for a club owner huh lol. anyway, if anyone has any suggestions on anything i can do pleeeese help lol, i have edited preferences to within an inch of their life hehhe. other people can use wireless air cards so must be something wrong. xxx chey xxx

oh and:
intel core duo processor T5450 (1.66 GHz, 667 MHz fsb L2 cache)
1024MB NVIDIA GeForce
running everything else at recomended
and VISTA (hate vista, but what can you do lol)

although when i log on it also says changing to vista basic as one or more running programmes visual elements cannot run or something)

875U USB Wireless modem ?

Yeh i image that wouldnt be very fast, try test the line;
http://www.speedtest.net/

I doubt they give you the speed they promised, but it sounds like youre on a way to slow isp to update SL fast enough.

If you can post your laptops specs, I suspect the 1gb nVidia Geoforce is using shared system memory, depending on how much memory you have, this can cause a problem. Vista and XP 32 bit, can only address 4gb of memory.

I run Vista on my system (dual boot as I still use XP for some things), sounds like you need to turn off the eye candy. Try setting Vista to run for performance, that will save a lot of disc/memory swapping, especially as SL is such a system hog.

As you use a wireless connection, check that you are the only person using your connection and that half of your local residents aren't getting free broadband at your expense. In addition, use the software that came with your card, to test and report your connection speed between your system and the router. Running speed tests from websites similar to those already posted above is a good overal check.

If your connection speed is crawling, turn off voice and media functions in SL, at least until everything has downloaded and rezzed. VIOP (Voice) requires around a 1-2mbps continous connection, and with voice enabled, the client will keep trying to establish that connection to the voice servers, stealing more bandwidth. Depending on what media you are trying to watch/listen to, again this tries to establish its connection to the streaming server whilst everything else is going on.

One last thing for now, make sure you do not sit next/close to any electrical devices such as microwaves, washing machines. Each of which, including dense walls and steel frames, will reduce your connection considerably. EDIT: This only applies to RL btw

Probably that you were expecting the ISP to perform as advertised, or as their claims led you to believe (different things, those two).

Can you check your signal quality?

It's entirely possible that you just have a very poor signal. Cellular Internet services are slow, but they generally aren't that slow.

Also, know your bandwidth caps. They're generally fairly low with cellular services (under 20 or 30GB per month, usually). Staying logged into SL, especially when in a club with music going, can really eat up a lot bandwidth.

Your slow (lag) situation is clearly due to bandwidth restrictions. Even at 300kbps you will barely be able to make SL useable, let alone use voice and or media streams.

Buildings with steel reinforcement or frame, will dramitcally reduce your signal between your atena and the broadcasting node, even low cloud will cause interference.

signal seems fine
06-28-2008 15:10
my signal seems fine in the location of the building i am in, it's pretty much at full strength. Does anyone know of any companies which offer a higher bandwidth? this is costing an arm and a leg to use this aircard and it's useless lol. I am using the sierra wireless 3G watcher 875U, billed through O2. they said it's the fastest they have but surely there must be other companies out there offering better options in England. It's hard to find something that works well which doesn't need to be routed to a fixed line.

It will be the connection - the bars that you are shown don't really mean anything to be honest. I have certainly run SL via a 3G modem, but your location can make a _radical_ difference. Sometimes even moving a metre or two is the difference between dialup and broadband speeds.

Perhaps obtain a longer USB cable, and try to move the modem around a little....

moved location

I am with the same company for my cell phone and have a strong signal with that in the same location. I have also tried bringing the laptop home and still just as slow. so i assume it must be the bandwidth. Think i may need to go shopping around again for a new ISP.

i have clearwire, who now has a usb dongle (i have the big black home box) and if you can get it in your area their "768"k is actually "768" on average and quite often spikes upto 1.2mbs

+ its cheaper than those celphone dillholes (like 35 bucks a month)

sure its not DSL EXTREME or CABLE MODEM COMCASTIC but its still 2x as fast and 2x as cheap vs cellular

oh just dont go planning on traveling the country with it, bad if your a jet-setter
