.raw files for island sim design??

Other than the six templates, the Lindens will only accept .raw files from a user for the design of an island sim, according to their "island" page on this site. It's unclear what they want on a .raw file, or how it is used. I e-mailed support for more details, and got a one sentence reply -- "At this time we can only accept .raw files."

Sorry, Lindens, that wasn't much help. So can anyone answer the following:

How is the .raw used in helping to design an island sim? Is it used like an elevation point axis file, such as .dem or .arc? Is it a color-coded elevation file, in which case .tga, .tif, .bmp, or even .jpg could be used?

Why a .raw file only? I thought .raw files were pretty much an obsolete digital photography format -- I've never heard of .raw files being used in cartographical, elevation, and terrain-generating software.

Does anyone know of a good freeware conversion program for converting various graphical or point location files to .raw?

I'm prepared to furnish the Lindens with a graphical or epa file, but I have no experience with .raw, and none of the software I have access to lists it as a conversion.

Donovan, I just emailed you further information about .raw files, private islands, and creating height fields.

Thank you, Jeska; the document you e-mailed was very helpful, and if I have further questions, I'll know how to ask.

Torley, are the following from that page true for all parcels, or only a full sim?
From: someone
Land owners can disallow the rezzing of objects or running scripts (effective up to 40m above ground). Sound can optionally be restricted to a parcel, with no sound leaving or entering it. Land parcels can have an audio stream associated with them.
i ask because, on live help late last night, a few of your siblings said script stoppage etc. were only for full sims.

^ Those are parcel properties in About Land, so yes, they're true for all parcels. Love how you said "siblings" too. :)

but can one temporarily disable scripts on a parcel, which we would like to do on very scripty land when there is a sailing event next to the parcel? i am not seeing it in Edit/AboutLand. in AboutLand, i see how to prevent other residents from running scripts. but not just how to turn sripts off on the parcel and later turn them back on.

^ Right, that "Run Scripts" checkbox doesn't affect the parcel owner. But yes, it will disable other people's scripts from running. However, it only extends so high above the ground. A good example is to go to the Welcome Area in Ahern with scripted attachments and fly up a bit. That wouldn't be so much a concern for boats tho (referring to our other conversation).
