I am having major trouble with Second Life today. I logged in earlier today with no problems. Then, approximately an hour ago, I logged in and was staring at a wall. Nothing would come into proper resolution. I went to another landmark, with same results. I stood for a very long time but nothing works. So I cleared my cache in Network settings and increased my bandwidth to 600. Then the problem got worse. Now nothing works. I log in to nothing but gray. My inventory is always loading. I cannot use search, because it is always searching. SL has crashed several times now. The crash logger screen comes up and I guess reports the crash. Also, when I "quit" Second life, the bar only gets about a quarter of the way to full before it just closes. It usually takes much longer. I think that something is very wrong here. Any help would be appreciated.

It sometimes takes more and one or two cache clearings to get it all cleaned out. If your computer and connection allows more that 600 mbps then that setting should not cause your problem. But if think it is, on the help drop down menu select "lag meter".......see if you are getting packet loss. If you see packet loss then LOWER your bandwidth til it stops. Unless the packet loss is generated somewhere between your modem and LL's servers the swamping of the computer and your connection with more than it can handle creates packet loss to your viewer.....but most computers on a high speed connection should be able to handle 600 + mbps.

Also reset your modem and router if you have one.

One more thing to try too.........when you log in instead of just connecting to your normal place when you log in, change that to a quiet sim. Philudoria is the sim I live in and is seldom more than 5 avis in population at any given time. Also the scripts are low. A quiet log in point often helps on the initial log in........you can tp to where you want after everything rezzes usually without further problems.

Now, if none of this works for you come back and give us some specs for your computer and what version of SL are you using.

The lag meter has my Network in red. It says:

"Connection ping time is over 600 ms
Possible bad connection or file-sharing app."

"Connection is dropping over 10% of packets.
Possible bad connection or 'Bandwidth' pref too high"

I have cleared the cache for a second and third time and have arrived at Philudoria. The network lag meter still says the same thing. What does this mean? I have lowered bandwidth to 400 even.

I have also lost almost all of my objects, and all but one of my landmarks.

Check to make sure nothing else if running in the background on your computer........like email checkers, instant messaging etc. And reset your router and/or modem. You do that by unplugging it from the electrial source and leaving it off for at least 3 mins (5 is better). The plug it back in. It's best to shut down your computer before you do that.

And another question........are you using wireless or a hard wired network to your modem?

The apparent loss of your objects and landmarks is probably bogus. Your inventory is not loading due to poor connections to the servers.

I checked the background programs in task manager and it is all the usual stuff. I power cycled my modem, also. I use a satellite connection, with 1500 kbs download, 200 kbs upload speeds. Usually I am connected through the router, but I have now put line directly into computer to see if it would help (it does not). I hope this is a transitory issue, because I have grown to like SL very much. I hope you are right about my inventory, too.

Here are my specs:

Dell XPS 400

Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2
Intel(R)
Pentium(R) D CPU 2.80 GHz
2.79 GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 7300 LE

SL version: 1.19.1(4) April 2nd, 2008

Anything else you need to know, please tell me. This is very frsutrating, and I thank you for your help so far.

Okay, just to satisfy a remote possibility. Try uninstalling SL and when you've done that do a search for files on your computer and manually delete anything found relating to SL.
Don't worry you won't lose anything.............all your inventory and avatar is stored on LL's servers. You will have to reset any special preferrences you may have set since the reinstalling of SL will set everything back to the default. You are only uninstalling and reinstalling your viewer.......everything in your inventory is not on your viewer, just your preferrences will be changed.

When you reinstall SL, save to your disk and install from there instead of running from the website.

Also, do me a favor. When you are "offline" check your firewall for activity both in and out from your computer. That message about file sharing in the ping report sort of bothers me.

Since you are using a broadband modem of some kind, you should have filter boxes etc, if you have purchased a new phone, skybox, xbox or anything can connect throught the phone line, make sure you are using the same filter as the one you are using for your modem.

It was just a thought.. but it does mess about with the connection speeds.

Try this also...

Press CTRL+Alt+Delete to open your task manager. Click on File and run new task Type msconfig and hit enter/click ok.

When Msconfig opens go to Services, Look for Bonjour and disable it. It is part of Apple.in file sharing app and steal bandwisth like you would not believe.

Download a program called Winpatrol use it to speed up your load time and to reduce the resource usage, look into your burning sofware and back-up software etc, they can be started manually so don't let them boot up when windows starts.

That is all I can think of

Apart from, Defrag your computer 2 times a month aswell
