That is just SL.

If you want to be frugal with the bandwidth, turn off texture loading, but it wont be pretty.

Some of the 3rd party viewers have optimized caching for textures and sounds (I know Rainbow/Cool and Cool SL have, not sure about others). That does not require to load these repeatedly over the network. But I doubt it really makes a big difference for your bandwidth usage, rather the rendering speed. Best bet cut down your bandwidth setting or use a text only client. More alternatives are listed here: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Alternate_viewers

i'd say turning bandwidth down will only make the sl client take more time to download gigabytes of textures.

reducing your draw distance instead will make it require less textures because you simply see less far.

To run off texture downloading:

1 - Activate the "Advanced" Menu by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+D

2 - Advanced > Rendering > Disable textures

Your SL will stop downloading textures on everything leaving your life pretty grey. But you will be able to walk around talk etc.

Avoid going to lots of places. Avoid moving your camera all over the place. Prefer places with walls and not windows.

Every time you look at something new, you probably are downloading objects and textures. Avoid looking at new stuff.

Try googling METAbolt. It's a text viewer made for low bandwidth machines. SL is very data intensive. If you have a cap limit on your internet, SL is not really a game for you.

If you aren't interested in voice chat, disable it.

If you aren't particularly interested in the music streams or video streams that might be playing, turn them off.
