If you dont have at least i gig of ram do that right away, i use 2 gig myself, clear your cache in the network tab of the prefrences and dont run other applications when running sl, i also with 2 gig upped my cache from 500 to 750
Hope this helps

I have 4G and get the SmartHeap errors eventually. They seem to kick in when the client bloats itself up to 1.3G.

Out of Memory in Smartheap Library errors

Right now there are several open issues in JIRA goin on :
http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-3943
and
http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-6389

AFAIK this is not really a SL fault but most likely a Windows fault, cos this error occurs to most Windows users since the last WinXP update (MS patch day).

Microsoft is aware of that SmartHeap library problem and provides a hotfix for that, but neither this hotfix is well tested and checked nor is it available for all localized versions of WinXP

I wonder When Soon Is?

This is from a Torley Linden post on the jira on Feb. 5 :

From Steve Linden, who's been looking at various bugs of this kind:

"This is a dupe of other memory leak bugs.
We will be abandoning SmartHeap for tcmalloc or something else soon."

I get the smart heap memory problem as well. I guess over 2 months is shorter than soon?

Something to try to clear up the SmartHeap errors, but only applies to Windows XP sp2:

Under "Regional and Language Options" in Control Panel:

Languages Tab

Uncheck "Install files for East Asian Languages"

Click okay.

This is from the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

You may receive a "MEM_BAD_POINTER" error message on a computer that is running Windows XP with Service Pack 2
