hi all.

here I have an emachine with a small cpu and I put in it a nvidia 8500gt video card.
I was getting about 11 fps in help island, with many settings maxed, so i brought down some of the figures, still around 11 fps.

so here I went to best buy and got a pny xlr8 GTS 250 with 1024 video ram!
[maybe like shoving an 8 cylindar engine into a Volkswagon beetle!]

so today i booted it up and i noticed
right away that the images looked far far better on my monitor.

but the *real* shock was that 50 fps, in windowed mode, that I now seem to have on that help island!!

!!!

speaks for itself. i need to write no more!

Your small Emachine probably has a small power supply to go with it. You'll smoke that power supply in short order I'm afraid.

Look at the minimum requirements for the card......get a power supply that is at least what it recommends. Bigger won't hurt. Plus you just might notice even more performance from that card.

Be cautious when looking for a new power supply -- emachines was horrible for using proprietary shaped ones.

hi all.

power supply?

my emachine had all of 250 watts!!
I bought, with my new videocard, a 650 watt antec earthwatts, the 250 requries only a 450 watt psu. should be enough.

I forgot to mention that I have the, apparently, new driver for this card too. the 190.xx version. I have read that the 175 is bes for sl, the 180s did not work nearly at all.
so far I see no problems.

There was an OpenGL feature called Palletized Textures that the 1.21 and older viewers used. Nvidia dropped support for it in the 180 drivers, and that caused problems until SL dropped it with the 1.22 viewer. The newer drivers work file with current versions of SL.
