I like many djs am useing streaming audio to compliment my events and today I hosted the largest event yet with over 30 people. The sound began to clip badly for a lot of people. What can I do to stop this my hosting is rated at 60 people at 128kbit stereo. The encodeing is high quality. The onlu thing I can think of is with all those people second life and the stream started fighting for bandwidth. Do I need to reduce my shoutcast hosting is there better technology? I dont like live369 because it gives those dumb comercials when you get past a certain amount of people. Please help hmm other info Running sam 2.8.xx on an athlon 1600 dedicated machine with 512 megs of ram on a 612/4000 capped cable modem connection that most prime time nights measures at 580/3300 soo its pretty good. I dont seem to be haveing problems due to bandwith on my side and the server is b2planet I have hosted other servers with them without that problem. Used to run quake server there. ...
Its very embaressing when your stream starts clipping when you have a large event with 30 people or more present.

128 kbps times 30 people is 3840 kbps...

Does your server provider have the pipe for that? That's 3 megs a second uploading speed... that's a phat pipe.

Thats what I pay for. They are selling it as 60 users at 128kbit. I have no way of testing that sort of load outside of second life.

Sounds like you need to complain to your service provider? Shoutcast or ISP, either one.

this problem ahs been experianced by several other djs in our little group I have changed 128kbit stereo mp3 to 80kbit stereo mp3 pro and that seemed to do the trick when a sim reaches 20 it seems to start the skipping but now to a far lesser degree. This seems to be client side because people who do not have their streaming audio quality set to 128kbit dont get this problem. From the little I have been asking still looking into this

Midnight, I'm not sure that the skipping we are hearing is not related to OUR connections, when we DJ, obviously, we must send the data to the server before the server can play it for us. I would think that perhaps, if our connection farts for a moment, this will be represented on the stream by a "Skip".. I dont think that lowering the servers bitrate is the best solution. I mean, I've used your stream for some fairly high amounts of listners, and the skipping was not that bad, at least everyone could connect, and, they heard nearly cd quality music!~
