Disable most graphics settings, turn most network settings down to 0, max out the cache and you will be fine. Keep some on land and objects so you will be able to get around.

Disable rendering some things, that seems to help a bit. Hey, at least you're not on satellite dialup like I was

Turn the network settings to custom and set them so the overall bandwith is less than half of your real bandwith. If you still get flooded by the server (packetloss meter goes red), set it even lower.
Turn the view distance as low as possible, move as little as possible, don't go near sim borders, stay in the sim you're in, preferably in areas with a low number of prims. Don't rez anything that has alot of prims.
Good luck :)

You can also mute the audio in the preferences. Sound will not be requested, and will save some bandwidth.

From: someone Originally posted by Ken Virgo Does anyone know what the best settings are if you have DSL? 2.2ghz 1024mb RAM Not that I'm eager to contribute to a hijacked thread, but just so the question can die here and now, there is no best setting for DSL, as DSL performance varies incredibly, depending on your distance form the nearest hub, the amount of people on it, etc. When I first got Verizon DSL a year and a half ago, it was lightning fast. Now it's around a third of its former speed. I'm lucky to get 500K. The best solution for you is to go to Cnet and do the bandwidth meter thingy so at least you know your actual speed, not just what the inflated number that was quoted to you by your ISP. From there, play around with your network settings and display settings until you reach what you consider to be the best performance/appearance happy medium. Whatever you do, don't turn off shine/bump (or whatever they've changed the name to this week) to increase performance. Sacrifice anything else but that. You miss too much of the world without it. As someone who creates a lot of stuff, I hate it when people can't see it properly.
