Machine has been manually upgraded and now it's crashing.

Fresh install of Windows XP, all drivers for everything are the latest, Most recent SecondLife downloaded.. it crashes.

And surmise to say, my machine exceeds the requirements.

Intel Core2Duo 3.16ghz
2GB DDR2 Ram
ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series

Rather upset about having to resort to SLeek and being only able to talk to my friends easily..

Why did you reinstall XP? I mean was there some problem that you thought would be solved by a format/reinstall of your operating system? I'm not saying that an occassional format and clean install of Windows is a bad thing (I've done it a number of times myself) but if you did that to fix something and it did not fix it then you might need to look somewhere else for the source of the problem. The problem I've found with operating system reinstallations is that sometimes you don't also reinstall some little, almost forgotten program that is essentual to some programs working properly......many say .NET is such a program (I don't know if that's true or not, but I have it installed on my system anyway). Also, when you reinstalled XP I assume you made a quick trip to Windows Update to get all the updates.........did you let Windows install any drivers for you? And, there are occassions when the latest driver is NOT the best to use for SL.......especially ATI. Try a slightly older version instead. I use nVidia so I'm not too sure about which to use "Omega" or "Catalyst"..........but I've read here in this forum that Omega's have better luck with SL.

It's more useful to actually give the version number of Second Life than to say "the latest". In a week or two, there may be a different version that's the latest.

What service pack level is your XP at?

What version of Quicktime?

Do you have Silverlight installed?

What particular one of the 4800 series do you have?

What wattage is your power supply?

Did you let windows upgrade your sound card drivers, network card drivers, etc.?

Have you checked to see that your fans are all spinning at proper speed and free of dust?

What's the version number for your video driver and what version of Catalyst?

Well considering how drastic the entire machine change was, If I had not reinstalled my Windows, I would've always gotten a BSOD whenever I booted into it because of how incompatibile the change was. Yes, the Fresh XP was fully updated and such. No I always collect the latest drivers from official developer websites.

What did you change, and why?

What did you change, and why?

ALL of the machine. And because I needed the upgrade for more demanding games that I also play.

When I say ALL, I mean ALL.

Motherboard,
Powersupply,
RAM
CPU
Graphics Card
Sound Card
Network Card

The only thing that remained from my old machine was the hard-drives and the PC case.

So you did not manually upgrade the system...........you built a completely new computer. Pretty big difference. That means you have all new hardware. It means you need to update ALL your drivers.........not just video. A brand new computer usually needs a little tweaking in the BIOS............you might have to check that. There's a ton of things that could be just a little out of whack that will cause you problems. Putting together a computer is not all that difficult (I've done it 4 times)..........but it always needs proper setting up (configuration) to work properly. Sometimes, even if you followed the instructions to the "t", it needs some little feature turned on or off. Go through your BIOS again........double check every little thing. Get all your drivers updated. Make sure all your plug in devices are properly seated......all contacts are clean and tight. Your case is probably clean, but are all your fans working properly? Is your heat sink on your CPU (and video card if it has one) installed properly and seated to allow good heat transfer to the vanes?

We did not know you had a completely new, homebrew computer. Quite a different animal to try to "troubleshoot".......and really this forum is not the best place for that anyway. Try Googling "home built computer support" to find a place where a little more well versed crowd hangs out.

VOTE JIRA FOR THIS ATI 48xx based issue PLEASE!
08-31-2008 11:45
Hi Folks,

I've been experianced strange behaviour like Textures mismatch, very slow rendering during Texture load and total SL Viewer crash, right after login with a ATI 4850 card, using the latest ATI Driver v8.8.
I've opened a JIRA issue, right here: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-8717

Please login to JIRA, and VOTE for this issue, so it will become more & more importand to be fixed ASAP. This is the only way to get rid of this delayed attention of Linden Lab, to support ATI Cards PROPERLY in the SL Viewer!

This urgently need to be debugged and fixed by the LL developer team.
Hey Guys, since the ATI 4850 Card is so rockin' cheap while it bring's a tremendous boost to your PC, it'll be spread on the market rapidly during the next month. So this has to be paid attention...

If you VOTE for it, also WATCH this issue on JIRA, so LL will notice there's a lot Users out there, using a ATI Card and struggling with the SL Viewer (wich is btw the ONLY application/game nowadays, that has such problems with a ATI Card).

Thanks for your attention & voting for this, to help a lot of SL Residents, playing SL with a ATI Card, BETTER.

Cheers,
Dandare

Please, do not treat me like an idiot. I manually upgraded the system. I manually took each piece of new hardware, put it into the machine, configured the bios, reinstalled windows after backing up important files, updated everything to their latest drivers.

I am not your typical brainless person that needs their hand held, and I personally find your post rather insulting.

Then, as far as I'm concerned you are on your own. I was not trying to be insulting. Just surprised that the machine you are having problems with is actually a brand new computer (for all practical purposes). Up grading means you upgraded one, two or maybe three components but left the main computer as is..........CPU, motherboard, HD, etc. If you had enlightened us up front you might have your problem solved by now......who knows.

I still think you would be better off posting your problems on some home builders forum. You'll likely get much better advice.

Good luck.

My crashing seems to have been eliminated going back to driver version 8.5 for my Radeon X1950pro. I removed the Catalyst control center also and just installed the driver itself. Have not crashed all day. Normally crash at least once an hour with driver versions 8.6 on up. Not sure if 8.5 works well with newer HD model cards though.

Necropost much?

Come on, man. Three long-dead threads dug up in five minutes, that's gotta be a new record.
