Hi All
I'm suffering from a very irritating problem, and I wondered if anyone knew what the trouble was.
When I go into appearance, it takes *forever* to do anything. It doesn't matter when I do it, whether I've been lagging generally or not. I also get (not responding) on the SL taskbar.
The images take a long long time to load, and it can literally take me 20 minutes to change the colour of my hair !
I'm running win xp, Pentium4 2.6mhz, 512 ram, 64mb radeon 9000 vid card. The world in general runs fine, and I can change appearance without problems on my husband's PC.
It didn't do it when I first joined back in May, but this is really driving me insane.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Yeah, the Appearance editor has always been terrible. In terms of both UI and performance, I consider it to be the worst-designed part of SL.
If I had to guess, I'd probably blame your video card. It's a pretty low-end model. Still, it's interesting that it's become worse in the last month or so. I assume you haven't changed your hardware or drivers at all during that time? Was there a specific version where it suddenly got much worse?
What is your husband's hardware like?

Hi Catherine My hubby has 1gb of ram, pentium 4 with i believe 3.0 ghz, and a 256 vid card. I can't remember exactly when it all went wrong, but I did install some Omega drivers as recommended by a Linden to cure my *blackout* problems of avatars and buildings at a certain distance. Could that be it ? Appearance works eventually, unless my patience runs out in the meantime and i just close the durn thing it's just very frustrating. Thanks

Appearence Problem

I'm running on a MAC and have the same problem. I never had the problem before the major update, but have had it since. I've tried reducing my inventory and a number of other things, but to no avail. It's a little annoying because it takes me an hour and a half to get dressed. (An hour to decide what to where and a half hour to get it on my Avitar).

Hi Gemini,
I'm getting exactly the same problem. When I go into appearance, my framerate drops to about half a frame/sec until all the images are loaded, which can take forever. I've got a similar system to yours and I'm stuck with a crappy Radeon Mobility 9000 card. I also changed to the omega drivers to get rid of texture corruption and blackouts, (what a relief!) so maybe that does have something to do with it.
I've just noticed the problem since the last update - everything was working fine beforehand.
Have you filed a bug report about this? If the Lindens get them from more than one person, I think they'll probably get round to looking at it sooner.

Okay, Gemini, Viola? You two should report that. You might also consider switching from the Omega drivers back to the current Catalyst drivers from ATI, to see if that improves the speed. (Yes, it will probably decrease the quality -- the point of the exercise is to see if it increases the SPEED.)
Rose, I don't have any advice for you, unfortunately. You know you don't have to be in Appearence mode to change clothes though, right?
You can open your inventory, and double-click the clothing items to wear them, or right-click on one you've already put on and select "Take off". It occurs to me that if you're using a horrible Mac mouse, Command-click should work, but if not, you should get a nice Logitech mouse -- they're cheap and about as good as the Apple ones.

Yes, I've created outfits and just drag them from inventory onto my Avitar as well as use the right click on the Avitar and "Take-Off". (I have a cool logitech mouse). The problem is that sometimes I'd like to change the color or length or something. This is just so time intensive.
I'm adding more memory to my MAC tonight (gift from hubby), so maybe that will make a difference, if so, I will let everyone know.
