I just looked at the system requirements - looks like the minimum graphics card supported is the 5600 - NUTZ, I have the 5500! Just want to make sure there is absolutely nothing I can do before I scrap this whole thing - and I already PAID and have Linden $$ with no way to get on with my second life! Any suggestions? Thanks SO much!

Try a 7600 model. I used a 5500 for a long time.......I have a friend that still uses a 5500 and he having nothing but problems. Upgrade to a 7600 and you be happy. If you can pay for it.

card specs and system ram
10-29-2006 14:52
I have an older NVIDIA GeForce MX4000 - it's PCI with 128MB of DDR ram. It's never had a problem running SL, but then I do have 2 gigs of system ram. I've been seeing where the system ram is pretty important. Also saw where you need 4x the system ram to support the card ram, e.g. 256 MG card ram would need 1 gig system ram to take full advantage of card capabilities. I'm no expert, this is what I've gleaned from other forum posts...

I also have a 5500 but have 1.5 gig ram on my system and w/that I'm starting to see a depreciation in SL's performance. I'm hopig I can upgrade my vid card soon but I'm not too happy about the expenditure either. good luck!

A 5500 should work, slow or not - it has to work.
Make sure to get the latest driver from Nvidia.

I'm running SL on a Geforce2-MX200 at the Moment, its the worst
Video Card in the History of Nvidia GeForce - but it works.

(still waiting for my better Card to be replaced *sighs*)

THe MX200 was crap, but the MX400 was quite a bargain back in 2000. :D

new card
11-03-2006 07:30
Despite the fact that my MX4000 works ok, I've decided to upgrade. I'm greedy I guess; ok just isn't enough, I want GREAT.
So I went to Newegg and ordered an EVGA 7600GS AGP with 256 MB. My current card is PCI and I've heard going AGP (or, even better, PCI Express) makes a big difference.
Also I looked at the triangles per second (aka polygons/sec) on my current card and it's 31 million per second. The new card is somehting like 281 million per second. Maybe now I'll be able to see all that crazy flexi-prim hair everyone loves/hates so much...

Are you on PC or MAC? Because you can get a hot card for a PC - cheap! (PCIe: Radeon X800 GTO 128MB; AGP: GeForce 6600 )

My 5600 ceased to be usable in SL when 1.9.1.16 hit beta, and when 1.9.1 was released as 1.10 I had to upgrade.

The 5xxx series are apparently just not very good at the kind of texture programs introduced in 1.10.

I'm on a PC, and my new card arrived this weekend. Once I got it installed (only a wee bit of trouble, but not due to the card - I didn't have an AGP driver installed) it was SO nice!! I can move smoothly and see more detail. There are some clubs that would slow down any card, that hasn't changed...But now that I see what I really look like, I'm out shopping for a new skin (bought new shape already)!

Had a GeForce FX5200, worked for a week then a release came up (1.11?) and I couldn't move.

Picked up a laptop this weekend with an NVidia 7600. Oh my, SL isn't the sad overgrown VRML experiment I thought it was with the 5200.

GeForce FX 5500
11-24-2006 17:33
I was sittin here wondering what you guys were talking about - Im using the "GeForce FX 5500 256DDR" now in the game with no problems and I have only 1 GIG of ram. Got me to wondering that maybe your AGP Drivers (Accelerated Graphics Port) might be outta date. You should be able to find those drivers from your motherboard's manufacture.

try third party drivers
11-24-2006 18:19
Tho this has mainly to do with laptop users, the general idea holds true. Try third party drivers. www.laptopvideo2go.com for example has some modified drivers for mobile Nvidea cards. I use their latest drivers for my 5600 and it enables me to use ripple water again. The stock drivers from Nvidea dont support it. Ive tried the drivers from Omega but they didnt cut it. Omega just seems to tweak the stock drivers, while laptop2go fools your laptop card into acting like a desktop card. Hasnt blown up my machine yet, and solved a few issues I was having. Good luck.

I have the same issue. I have a FX5500 and it says the drivers aren't supported, even though they are the latest drivers from nVidia. But when I down grade to the drivers from my old MX4000 it works perfectly fine. It works ok but it makes my graphics on my desktop goofed up. But I looked at the supported cards and it says it's supported.

and while mines on rma im using a geforce 2, its slow but it works just fine

and for the last post try using a driver scrubber to remove all traces of old drivers and reinstall

I have 2 older PCs that both run SL release clients and 1.20
a Compaq AMD2800 piece of junk 1GB ramm, XFX5200 128k (APG) with Nvidia drivers, its slow and bad graphics but it runs it fine. looking to put in the best AGP I can on this one and at 113USD for a 7600GT 512 thats a good deal. you can find 6200's for 50 USD same cost as those fx 5200 and 5500s

the other is a white box pentium4 3.5kh running an FX4000/4200? or some odd thing (its really old 128k PCI ) Nvidia drivers the latest for it witch are quite old. 1 GB ramm this one runs SL as well but only the release client set at low everything and its molasses very slow and gray, but it can stay up and running for hours on end, both can.

er, if it's a 5500, it's probably not PCIe. And he sort of missed the boat for getting a decent AGP card. Unless he can find a 7600 somewhere.

That said, a 5500 should work, I have a friend running an old 4400ti, it's enough to get on with.

I wouldn't go with the "latest and greatest" drivers for an older card.

Perhaps try either the 163 or 169 series drivers.

Here's the driver archive:
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us

Also, when trying various driver versions, you'll likely need to run DriverCleaner or DriverSweeper in between each uninstall/reinstall.

Driver sweeper (free) is here:

theres 7600's all over the web - new AGPs, also at Frys in the states (although they are a bit pricey there).
