I've only tried the mac client for a few minutes total, but in the time I was on, it disturbingly placed my head firmly in my butt. (On the avatar, seriously)
Also the hands were flopping around backwards and some of the body joints were reversed. I'll play with it again a bit later to see if it's a consistant problem or just some bizarre quirk I happened to hit.

Ah, you have an NVidia card. If you said that your av was all black then I'd say that you have an ATI.
Go to settings, options and uncheck the use vertex program for avatars check box.
Known problem that is being worked on.
