Glitch: Polys like prisms shooting across screen

I've introduced a co-worker to the wonderful world of SL and he has an older computer like I do (like 5 years old), and he's having a problem I have never seen before. He has these polys that look like prisms that shoot across the screen from various places. Some have texture, and some are just grey, but they are pretty severe and make it impossible to see anything. It happens more in crowded areas. Even on the lowest settings in SL preferences, he gets them. Can anyone help?

I have seen that a few times, it's often said to be associated with a failing or overheating video card (it certainly was for me!).

Yeah as Argent said this really seems to be a heat issue. My ATI x1950 is really really prone to this in SL (and for some reason only SL) - and regularly needs a strip down, clean out of fans and heatsinks, and a reseating in its slot.

Might be an idea to suggest a thorough clean out of computer with the issue and run with case open just to see if problem goes away ?

Edit / Preferences / Graphics - check Custom, click Advanced and uncheck "Enable OpenGL VBO" if it's checked.

Some more information would be useful too if that's not the issue. Even a copy/paste of your co-worker's Help / About Second Life would work :).

That's worth trying but it's not a certain fix, I first saw this problem when my graphics card was dying back before they added VBO.

That *used* to work for me Kitty - recently toggling VBOs gives me either a few triangles, or a lot of triangles :(

Sometimes whichever toggle state (it varies) gives me few triangles seems to gradually 'fade them away' mysteriously as I cam away from the trouble spot that seemed to kick them off. Other times they stay around like unwanted triangular ufos at a 50s saucer convention.

Maybe its a combo of failing/overheating hardware getting stressed by the extra overhead of implementing VBOs and my card is failing to cope that little bit more now ?
