Can Anyone Please Recommend a Graphics Fix For This?

I have an HP Media Center Home Edition with Integrated ATI Radeon Xpress 200 Graphics, AMD Athlon 64 x2, 1 GB memory, 250 GB HD.

I was doing fine with the Release Candidate until the recent update that included WindLight. Then I couldn't see the clouds or water reflections.

So I updated my Graphics to Catalyst 8.3 All was well however, after a short period I could hardly move, type, function at all.

I uninstalled the Catalyst per a friend's suggestion and installed Radeon Xpress 200 (Omega something). This took away the WindLight water and cloud effects but at least I could function.

Then today I found that all avatars are invisible to me unless they are right next to me. This happened on another site as well though the distance was further.

I know I'm not alone on this but I can't find any solution. Can anyone who knows what is wrong recommend something for my system that will work? Will this graphics system never work here? Do I need to buy and install something different? Or should I go on vacation.. lol

I'm sorry but I am a complete dope when it comes to computers so if you have an idea please tell me as though I was a 4 year old. Thanks!

in very simple terms: your graphics aren't supported. You are trying to run a high end graphics application on a very limited video card that SL isn't really made to run on. "It might work now but not later" has been their stance on such cards since I started SL in 2004. I recommend buying a new video card. You will need to get one that will plug into it, either AGP or PCI-e (depends on how old your computer is). You can buy an Nvidia 8600GT for about $100 US and it will be plenty to run SL reasonably well.

What if you go back to the old viewer, not the release candidate but the original SL viewer? I could not run windlight at more than about 5 fps on my old computer and that has a better card than your machine, but it ran great with the old viewer.

Larrisa - I went back to the old viewer and the Friends List never worked.

I am doing okay on the Release viewer. I can see the lighting difference (everything in shadows is so unnaturally dark) but no clouds/water effects. And when I turn in any direction, all build graphics are gone and then instantly show up... but at least I can get on!

Now I'm afraid that if I get a so-so graphics card, it won't be long before I need something better or find myself in the same mess. I'll have to do more research I think. I'd consider getting another computer but I hate Vista.

I build... a lot! lol So it is of extreme importance to me to be able to know exactly what the build will look like. And I own a sim... equally important I once thought but with all of the options available with WindLight no two people will be seeing this SL world the same anyway ;)
