My wife just started playing and we have both computers going through a router to a cable modem. Either one of us can be in SL with no issues. If we are BOTH on however, it starts acting weird and eventually just locks. Any ideas on what the deal is? I saw a similar thread a bit ago, but can't seem to find it again... I guess I am feeding the wrong search criterion.

Finally, tonight, after much prompting from my gf to "get this fixed", it occured to me that i had placed my computer on the "DMZ" in the linksys's settings, so that i could remote desktop to my machine from work. Changing this back to the default of xxx.xxx.xxx.0 for NO "DMZ" host resolved the problem. Lesson learned? When multipule ppl are playing SL behind a Linksys Cable/DSL router, ensure that the "DMZ" host feature is turned off!

I wish that was it. I've already made sure that DMZ was disabled... Her Vid card is very outdated but I don't see how that could affect MY connection to the game though.

My wife and I play SL at the same time, through a Linksys BEFSR41 router, so it will work. We even attended the Lindenworld opening together without a problem (other than the horrendous lag).
Both of our computers are connected directly to the router. Neither machine is in the DMZ of the router. Both of our computers meet the minimum system requirements for SL.
If you would like some more details, let me know, and I will try to help.

I'm not a techie, so this will ramble a bit, and I hope some techie types will know what I'm talking about.

My friends and I live in a triplex, so we wired ourselves up a LAN system and shared a single DSL line. At first, we had the same problem. My friends finally figured out the type of router we used didn't split the line evenly. As it was explained to me, the router was first giving the whole line to one computer, then another and then another, so really only 1 computer was connected at any time. Led to a lot of problems in online games.

The fixed it by using a different router that evenly split the line between every computer on the LAN. I wish I could be more technical. 8( but hopefully someone who reads this will know what my friends did.

Phoenix:

Some older routers do have problems with Second Life and two players playing at the same time. Before you run out and buy a new one, however, you should goto the manufacturer's website and make sure you are running the latest firmaware for the router. Often older routers with new firmware can work just fine with Second Life.

Another thing you might try is going to Preferences > Network and kicking it down to 200 kbps or less for both machines and see how it works for you.

Another issue my wife and I had with our old router - I had it set up to play EQ on, and some of the port forwarding and stuff I had never changed. Stuff was always getting mixed up, it was really bad at one point where it showed on her screen my amount of money and my screen showed hers. After clearing out all the old EQ settings, essentially reseting the router, we didn't have any more problems.

So basically, I dunno if you have changed settings on it before for compatibility with other games or software but those changes might adversly effect SL if they exist.

My husband (when he was interested in SL) and I had this exact same problem when we first started playing SL back in September. He would get my IM's and money etc. This fixed itself I guess but unfortunately too late because now he hates SL :(

What's your router make/model Jellin?

We have the same issue here and it's that SL servers send UDP to your IP, and your router's NAT table gets flooded and basically only allows the one port (which is 12034) to be associated with 1 computer in your house. If the second session is started the router table pukes and one (or usually all) of you get kicked off. Lots of older routers can't handle that much traffic on 1 port.

I talked to SL tech support about using a random port like in the range 12030-12060 so if more than 1 computer at an IP (or house) was trying to play the table wouldn't get corrupted for 12034, but they aren't going to do it. And logically I dont know how they could make their servers direct UDP (which is a connectionless broadcast type protocol unlike TCP) traffic to different ports at the same IP address anyways without some serious reprogramming (that doesnt help the masses).

LOL, so anyways please lemme know what type u have as my roomate has an account but we currently can't play together :(

Thanks! - Taylor
