A few weeks ago my SL sessions have been plagued by video glitches - random geometric patterns appearing in my field of vision. The more prims in the area, the worse the glitches get. Sometimes the patterns are physically attached to my avatar - I see more of this when I wear prim hair. really large glitch patterns can appear in outdoor settings, large enough to obstruct the entire horizon.
On occasion an object such as a table or a Jaded Jokers card will turn invisible; right clicking or zooming the view in and out will sometimes make it visible, other times I have to just wait. (Left-clicking an invisible JJ card always makes it visible, and I can always un-select it.)
My system runs WinXP Home, 4 GB memory, ATI Radeon HD 4650 video card. Am I going to be forced into a video card upgrade to get rid of this problem? I need to find an economical solution. This is driving me nuts.

Frequently the solution to this issue is to disable Vertex Buffer Objects.
In SL, go to the Edit menu, Preferences > Graphics > Hardware Options and uncheck the box for "Enable VBO". ATI cards don't play nice with this setting enabled for some reason.

Okay, that seems to have cleared it up.

The setup still works. Unfortunately, disabling VBO slows things down.

It's possible an automatic update replaced your drivers with less desirable ones.

From: Saregin Martynov The setup still works. Unfortunately, disabling VBO slows things down. That's perfectly normal. The whole point of VBO's is to speed things up. However, since ATI stubbornly refuses to follow OpenGL standards, their cards don't handle VBO's properly, and the result is the weird geometric patterns you saw. It's a very, very, very longstanding issue with ATI that is not likely to change any time soon, if ever at all. If you want to be able to use VBO's, get an nVidia card. That's the only answer. Otherwise, just live without the increased speed that VBO's offer. That's all you can do.
