It used to work fine up untill around January I guess is the last time I logged in. I'm not sure what the problem is. I've tried updating secondlife. I've tried Uninstalling and reinstalling secondlife. When it installs towards the end of the installing I get a few error codes. I hit skip problem about three times then it boots up. Everything looks normal, .. then it crashes right as it's about to connect.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A135. 2 GB of ram. Genuine Intel(R) CPU T2080 @1.73 Ghz
Windows Vista Home Basic Service Pack 1 / I belive it's an Intel Family video card

________________

i tried resintalling again to get an idea of what files aren't downloading unto my computer,.. they are DLL files. not sure what those are. any insight would be great. thanks

i dont know what version of Sl client are you using, but if you are with the last one try to change in your regional code in your control panel the "," for a "." yep the comma simbol for a Period simbol.

i mean in your Computer with Vista "control pannel" "regional configuration and lenguage", where you can change your keyboard cofiguration , country region etc you can change the "comma" for the "period( . )" in your decimal separator.

@Alastair

The files missing point to a 3rd party viewer and I guess that is ShadowViewer? Need some more info.

Description « Hide
Recently I filed a case on here - http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-13109 . I followed instructions, and they took care of the problem with not being able to download all the files. However, now when I try to login it still crashes at the same point. It gets to Initializing Multi Media then crashes. Close program button pops up.

How do I fix this problem. Any Insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

and was this about the not being able to download the DLL files, or is this a common fix?

You could try updating your video driver.

Looks like the url for Toshiba drivers is http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/home.jsp# . You might have a better url, I just looked that up in google by using toshiba laptop video drivers as a search term. There are a lot of sub-models that match your specs, so I didn't find out for sure if the driver you reported is up to date or not. Current drivers don't always work better than older drivers, unfortunately, so updating drivers is sometimes the cause of problems rather than the cure.

There are viewers other than the official Linden Lab current release you could try, such as the Cool Viewer, or the Nicholaz viewer, or the Imprudence viewer, and several others. Those alternate viewers can be found by googling for

second life alternate viewers

which will lead you to a page in the Second Life wiki ( wiki.secondlife.com) with a very logical title:

http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Alternate_viewers

Boy Lane who answered in a post above runs the Cool Viewer operation. He does windows compiles of viewers compiled for LInux by Henri BeauChamp, along with some other variations of SL viewer. Boy's page is at http://my.opera.com/boylane/blog/ .

The Imprudence viewer blog is at Imprudence viewer. There are some others listed in the wiki alternate viewers page.

Nicholaz viewer info is at http://nicholaz-beresford.blogspot.com/ .

Since you filed a jira issue in the past you should be able to file another one now, although of course you would need to keep in mind that the issue tracker is not for individual technical support.

You might try searching the jira for you computer model, you might it works better to do a site specific search at google's advanced search, or at regular google with

toshiba a135 site:jira.secondlife.com

or

intel 945 site:jira.secondlife.com

Another place to try might be the toshiba laptops forum at http://laptopforums.toshiba.com/tshb/

If you see any promising links it wouldn't hurt to post them here.

Ok thank you so much for the information. Cool Viewer is only used for linux according to the site, but I'm trying to use Rainbow Viewer. I'll keep you posted. thank you.

ok I've come to the conclusion it's not a Viewer error. The other viewers have the same issue. When I login,.. it gets to Initializing Multi Media.. then it says

"A Problem Caused The Program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. "

Then the Close program button is the only option given.

Boy Lane compiles the Cool Viewer for Windows and I think someone does a Mac version too.

I gave the url to get Cool Viewer at Boy Lane's site above.

If you put

cool viewer windows

into Google the first link that comes up is likely to be Boy Lane's blog, which will lead you to the download location for the Windows version of Cool Viewer.

That url is http://my.opera.com/boylane/blog/ , hopefully the same url as I gave above.

I know it's available for Windows because I'm running at the moment on Windows XP.

Boy's current post describes yet another variation, a viewer that's more like the current Linden Lab viewer in the interface, but with the various underlying improvements of the Cool Viewer.

@Alastair

Cool and Rainbow Viewer are pretty much the same, the difference is CV uses a better legacy UI whereas RV uses the official one.

Bot come without the files you mentioned above as these are not redistributable with a 3rd party viewer. That's why I was asking if you use a non-official build earlier.

It's pretty strange that you get that error message as all these files are included in an official build and do not need to be downloaded or installed separately. The installer should take care of all this. Also the viewer will run without these, but with a bit slower graphics and no voice.

The best would be to uninstall SL completely, then clean your application data folder which you can find here (Vista): C:\Users\<you>\Appdata\Roaming\SecondLife\ (make a backup first of chat/IM logs if you have them).

Then try to reinstall either SL or one of the 3rd party viewers. CV, RV, Imprudence, KirstenLee's and GreenLife Emerald all come with their own installer like SL and will install independently from an official client.

Given that you have Intel graphics please also update your drivers, but Intel is not the very best to have :)

Finally figured out what the problem was. The one thing I never tried. I uninstalled Quicktime and SL loaded just fine. There must have been corruption in the Quicktime files because when I originally tried to uninstall it, it wouldn't from the uninstall area. I had to go into Program Files and delete the folder manually, then go back to Uninstall Program area and do it again to finish the process. Thank you all so much for your time and effort in the advice you've given. You've enlightened me about other options I can use in the future with SL with the viewers and whatnot, and sure you've given wonderful advice for others in the future. Again thanks for your time and effort in helping me along through this. :)
