Bandwidth issues

Hello all,

I *so* want to play here, really enjoyed my first days at SL. Then came the shock, the bandwidth. I currently am on a cable plan, my limit is 4 GB each month. Anything above those 4 GB I have to pay hefty extra (I hope my ISP will listen to its users soon to raise that darned 4GB limit). Anyway, after playing 2 days at SL (about 6 hours total) I looked at my bandwidth counter, and I had used up more than 1 GB. Shock! I really would like to stay and play. Are there any settings that I can change maybe (like no audio etc.)? Please help!

Thank you,

Luna

Under Edit > Preferences, under the Network tab, you can see the "Maximum Bandwidth" slider. You can turn it all the way down to 100.

Also, under the Options tab, you can turn your Draw Distance down to 64m. That will only download object data within a 64m radius.

in the Audio tab, checking "Mute Audio" stops it from being downloaded. Also, before you do, disable "Play Streaming Music When Available". I'm told there's a pretty good possibility that SL may actually connect to, stream and decode the radio station, even though you can't actually hear anything. (Crazy, huh?)

That said, your best bet would be to look at other ISPs. 4GB is TINY. You could exceed your monthly quota several times over on dialup. I exceed your monthly quota daily.

Approximately where do you live? There might be others who can advise a more realistic bandwidth plan.

Thank you so much for all your tips, Catherine! I will try them all and see if they help.

Unfortunately the ISP is the best I can get right now. I live in Austria - and unfortunately not in Vienna anymore (there I would have more options), but in a small town.

Again, thank you for your help!

Ahh, I figured you were in a rural area. Is it a small local ISP? If so, you might consider calling and asking directly. Who knows, maybe there's some better deal you can work out. Other than that, there's unlikely to be much you could do that's both fast and high-bandwidth. Hopefully you can figure something out. Good luck!

Oh you have no idea how often I've tried to hammer at least *some* sense into my ISP. LOL! They keep telling me that "we'll do something about it", but saying that is all they've done so far.

Maybe you can bribe them! "Here's 20€. Can you turn my bandwidth limit off?" :)
