Hi ! I thought maybe it was because I'd jumped the gun and not waited for regular hours, before... But now, it's during the hours of 4 to 10 PM PST and I still can't log on at ALL. I have a Win ME operating system, Pentium 4, 1.5 Ghz with 512 MB RDRAM. Video card is 32 MB NVIDIA. Any help appreciated ! I was really looking forward to creating my sim ( Thanks ! U. V. PS) I forgot to add that the first thing that happens after I double-click on the desktop shortcut, is that my screen resizes to a smaller size. Maybe that will help diagnose the problem ?

Thanks Tracey for replying.
I thought maybe that might be it, so I turned off my firewall (not Norton). Didn't help.
Will find out whether there are any other security or firewall programs operating.
Thanks.

Anyone else have a suggestion ??

upgrade your nvidia drivers (or reinstall them if you're already using the latest and greatest)
set your display to true color (32 bit)
check/upgrade your directX
that's all I can think of...

Ok what message do you get? If you get unable to conenct it's internet connection plain and simple. If you have a router\firewall make sure that you are DMZ host or have the right ports open.

When Second Life runs, it write debugging information to a file called SecondLife.log. Depending on how and when things start going bad for you, that file may have some useful info in it.
If you do have a SecondLife.log (probably in your C:\ directory), email it to me (aarony@lindenlab.com) or to support@lindenlab.com and we'll see if we can diagnose the problem.
Thanks! Aaron

D'oh ! I should have posted the error message from the beginning. Apologies. Here is what it says: "Newview has caused an error in NVOPENGL.DLL . Newview will now close. If problem continues, try restarting your computer." I did restart a few different times (once per) when receiving this message but the same thing happened after restart. I will look for an error log and if I find one, will send it to the address given above. Thanks all ! PS) I did allow it to send an error log directly to Linden Labs most times... (But realise that may not be traceable to a specific user). PPS) Cute kitty ! U. V.

Ok, so it is a graphics problem.
The next step would be to look at what flavor of nVidia chip you have on your graphics card (we need a GeForce 2 or better) and what driver you are using (41.09 is the current version).

Well, I updated to the latest version 41.09 of NVidia, and I am now able to get to the SL sign in screen.
The first time, it almost completed logging on, then said it couldn't and that maybe the server was down.
The 2nd time and a few times after that, it simply froze completely at some point along the way and I had to do a hard-restart of the computer.
We do have a firewall, and I added the SL .exe files to allow those to access the internet. Not sure what the problem could still be.
Below is my post from this earlier today, with my graphics info. Thanks.
**********************
Here is what it says about the video card:
GeForce2 MX/MX 400 Bus Type: AGP BIOS Version: 3.11.01.17.20 On-Board Memory: 32 MB IRQ: 3 TV Encoder Type: Conexant Bt869
The info about display driver, direct draw driver, OpenGL installable client driver etc., all says:
4.13.01.1242
Thanks for any help/advice.

If your firewall is ZoneAlarm... there is your problem!

ZoneAlarm is fine

At least on my system, it is.
Would certainly be worth trying completely closing it down if SL can't connect even after you've told ZA to both allow it to connect to the net *and* to act as a server.
But it works fine here (and isn't the cause of my narcolepsy.. already ruled that out =)
I'd be more concerned by Norton's "Internet Security" -- I've seen lots of applications not be able to work through that one.
