If SL is your primary concern, don't buy ATI, buy NVidia. SL has issues with nearly all ATI cards and they are not good issues but show stoppers.

There are settings that can be turned off to stop some problems but it is really hit or miss. Last year i had an ATI card with SL and never had a problem with SL. But if you search the forums you will find a large number of people reporting problems with their SL who use ATI cards.

It sounds like you have no choice really. You probably won't have a hard time. If you do, just come here and I am sure the TechieWizards of the forums can bang it out for you.

I have a Radeon HD4850 thats works perfect with the latest ATI drivers and Windows Vista. If I use the card in WinXP it crashes often. The VBO thing seems to have been fixed in either operating system after installing the newest ATI driver 9.10 but is only stable in Vista.

However your results will very. What is most interesting is hardly a increase in performance or video quality going from a Radeon X1950pro to a Radeon HD4850. Huge gains in all other games, just not SL. I think it has to do with having to download everything as you go. Your vid card cannot process data it is waiting to get.

It may have to do with ATI's OpenGL drivers sucking.

If you must use an ATI graphics adapter, I suggest trying Boy Lane's Rainbow Viewer with the SSE2 patch:

I am not complaining at all about ATI and SL. Just doesn't have the performance gain from the newer card.

SL plays smooth with the HD4850 and Vista. I average 25fps in busy places. I was getting 18 with the X1950pro on the same settings though so not a huge gain. Other games, even a couple OpenGL ones, it jumped 35-65fps. I have no performance complaints with ATI and SL especially being the VBO thing seems to be fixed now.

But other people sure had problems.
