Hi, My SL crashed while quitting ("virtual function call" After that, I'm unable to walk, to change my clothes, etc, because I have a red lag light with this comment : "Network - possible bad connection or file sharing app". I've tried many times at different moments of the day, and, BTW, my surf and mail are working as usual. Therefore something might have been corrupted in SL files - not in Windows. Is there a method to fix this problem ? Or will I have to uninstll/reinstall ? In the latter case, will my account and avatar name still remain valid ? And will my personal data locally stored on my PC still available, or will it be erased by the uninstall procedure? Please help, it would be extremely discouraging to start again from scratch! Thanks for your attention

You could try clearing your cache. It is in the network section of your preferences.
If that does not work remove ALL of the second life install on your puter and reinstall. =)
Your problem does sounds like network issues though.
Have You tried restarting your router?

Uninstalling Secondlife will not change your account name, or lose any stored data....except for any changes you make to the preferences.
oh and you will have to go through the "you have just teleported" messages again.
to elaborate, your personal stuff(inventory, avatar) are stored on Linden Lab servers not on your machine. ((both a good and bad thing))

Thanks for your tips Alisha!
My router is off every night and restarted every morning.
I've checked my disks, no problem.
I've purged the cache and restarted SL ; then it worked for a few minutes and then, same problem.
Eventually I have desinstalled, deleted any reference to sl on my PC - including in the register - and reinstalled at a different place on my PC.
Login ok, but I still have the *same* problem !!
And: the last time I was flying near a protected area, and now I'm on the ground inside it... what will happen to me ?
I've tried a teleport, it takes *much* time, and eventually fails, I'm staying where I am, in this protected area (where I did *not*wish to go), can't walk, can't fly.
Install/Reinstall can't do more... what can do ??

Sounds like you efficiently removed all of SL. Hopefully You also found the secondlife folder inside your users application data folder(XP). As this is where your cache and preferences hide.
We are going to need more info for this=/
What kind of connection are you on? Is there a chance Your ISP limits your bandwidth after using a certain amount?
Is it possible something else is using up the bandwidth(file sharing)?
Computer spec too, just to me sure.

Hi,
I had moved the cache nearly from the beginning, and had no problem. Now the program and the cache are at a different place, another one. I have H:\Program files\Second Life\ // here is the program H:\Program files\Second Life\Cache // created by me
I'm the only user when playing.
I have an ADSL connection with speed generally rated between 5000 and 7000. I'm not aware of any limitation on uploading or downloading - this is more often the case (here in France) when you have a cable connection - which I have not.
My router is a Netgear 834GT.
I'm currently experiencing no lag on other sites.
Well, I know, it sounds like I would be saying there's no reason to this problem, but sure, there is one ! I'm only giving sincere information.
Now it seems that : - something in Win (file sharing managment) has been corrupted ?? (but remember, my disks are said ok) - or something at the SL server is wrong about my data.
In the second case there is no solution. In the first one, if there is one, it won't be basic.

Something I found out just the other day with my router (Linksys) that may help you. I thought the router was "secured" by default..........mine was not. I had to manually go into my router setup and secure my network from anyone accessing the internet through my router/modem. I don't mean they could access my home network but they could piggy back on my internet connection.
My problems were not near as severe as yours but I had intermittant connection problems to SL. On extreme cases my whole internet was as slow as a 56K dialup!!! I just happened to read a technical question on Kim Komando's "Tip of the Day" newletter concerning something completely different but about securing a home network. The question asker made the same assumption I did...........it was secured by default. Kim Komando recommended the person check that because that is not always the case. So I checked.........it was not. I secured it and the problems went away.
I want to say that my home network is wired (Cat5e) and not wireless.......that's the reason I hadn't really given any thought to securing my network. But the router is a wireless router (I know of none that are not these days) and anyone within my router's reception range could piggy back on me. And since my router is the "N" model it is long range...........it's entirely possible I could have had up to 5 neighbors using my connection.
Hope that helps a little.

The thing that has me confused is it worked before for You.
Although I have never done it, moving your cache folder should not change anything.
But even with cache redirected to that folder, I believe the .xml files are stored separately.
on my machine(still clinging to XP)
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner~~~~~~\Application Data\SecondLife\alisha_matova
You do need to have "hidden files" selected to see these.
Try deleting the folder with Your avatars name. This will completely "reset" your viewer the next time You log in. My guess is, if this is a corrupt setting or file, this is where it could hide.
...but...Your last comment about a "windows file sharing problem" has me wondering if you don't have something running in the background. Troubleshooting that from here is not something I am so good at, but maybe someone else here has some ideas. =) I would start by scanning and checking start up processes and the like.

Thanks for your time, Alisha ! Yesterday evening I've executed a soft (WinsockXPFix) which was told to solve connection problems in some cases. Without success, but I wasn't surprised because, as I had said, every other app works ok ; for example, yesterday evening, while I was unable to walk once more, and the red button being lit, I was on youtube, on purpose, without closing the game still "frozen", and at the same time watched a video with no problem! As you've mentionned, it's also striking that it *has* worked during 2-3 days. I think this crash while exiting might have corrupted something, somewhere BTW, even if I currently activate my ethernet cable connection - for performance - my Wifi is installed (and functional when I wish to), but it *is* protected by WPA-PSK with a personal sentence. I also have a look at the task manager from time to time, and I see nothing special - BTW, a soft generating net or cpu overhead wouldn't remain unnoticed in other applications. Now, I'm just feeling like creating another avatar with a different account, for testing. (I'm afraid it's impossible to copy an avatar - excepted its name- isn't it ?)
