I'm having the same problems - here's what is says for me:

Second Life 1.14.0 (1)

CPU: Not supported (2993 Mhz) ** That doesn't sound good **
Memory: 512 MB
OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
Graphics Card: GeForce 6600/PCI/SSE2
OpenGL Version: 2.0.0

Am I screwed?

Get more RAM. If you are a heavy SL user, you should have at a *minmum* 1GB RAM. But I would reccomend 2GB. I've been stuck with 1GB while my second is getting replaced, and after an hour or so, it really begins to chug. SL must be really frustrating with 512MB and nigh impossible with 256MB.

On top of your issues with RAM, it is possible that you may be having heat issues. SL can put a tremendous load on your system which might cause it to overheat and crash.
