I can't get SL to start on my new Vista machine with an ATI Radeon HD 4670 video card (from ASUS, model EAH4670).
I just installed the new Catalyst 8.10 package, and my card is using the 7.01.01.830 driver.
BIOS on the card is 011.008.000.000, from 9/21/08.
My monitor is at 1920 x 1200 resolution.
SL crashes as soon as I launch it, and sends a crash report. Doesn't even make it to the login screen.
Any ideas? I see some advice about using *older* drivers. Would that get me some traction?

Catalyst 8.8 and 8.10 have issues in SL

It's the drivers. I occasionally test ATI 3850 & 3870 single, dual, tri and quad crossfireX setups in SL, and whereas previous versions of Catalyst Drivers work, the 8.10s seem to have a similar crashing issue to the Catalyst 8.8s.
So far, I've found 8.7s are the best for ATi performance in SL. 8.9s fixed the issue of crashing, but performance is less and interestingly, the Shadow Draft SL Clients with Real-Time shadows don't work with the 8.9s. ...Hence, I'm on 8.7s. Concerning ATI 4000-series Graphics Cards, I'm not sure if you can roll back that far? Hope this info helps... perhaps try and get hold of some 8.7 Catalysts matched to your Operating System - bare in mind, some of the new Nvidia Guys and Gals, are having to roll back to older drivers too in order to see all the pretty stuff in SL. Rolling back to Catalyst 8.7 worked, for a while

I grabbed the Catalyst 8.7 installer from FileHippo.com and installed the packaged driver. There was no specific driver for the HD 4670 (as you suspected), but I went for the next-closest one I could find--the HD 4800. I was finally able to log into SL. It crashed out after about half-an-hour or so, but that's a great start and better than nothing! |

ATI just released Catalyst 8.11, and Second Life works fine now (I get a warming about an untested video card at startup., but I can login and everything looks OK).
