I have installed an ATi 4890 video card and sl crashes on startup. As suggested by the KB I have updated the drivers from the ATI wesite but no improvement. SL ran fine on my older GEForce 9500GS. help!

I think the suggestion of alternative viewers for ATI graphics card owners should probably be made a sticky, because switching to the Snowglobe viewer solved all my crashing problems.

This sounds like a familiar problem> I was setting up a computer for a friend yesterday. It has a Radeon X1650 and it the SL viewer kept crashing on startup. The Meerkat viewer lasted a bit longer but also crashed. No luck with Snowglobe either. Any suggestions?

In the ATI Catalyst Control Center, go to the 3D settings tab and disable Catalyst AI. That may help. Or not.

I got a response from SL support which reads as follows; "Second Life has very unique demands on graphic cards and unfortunately your graphic card is not compatible. We do not support HD graphic cards at this present time. I would suggest visiting the jira or are knowledge base for a solution or work around that a resident may have shared." I am disappointed as the KB states "Any ATI Radeon card, model 8500 or higher, is compatible. (This includes models such as the 8500, 9700, X300, but not models such as the 320 IGP or Xpress 200; see below!)" and my decision to upgrade to the new card was based on this. Nowhere does it say that HD is not covered. My card is a Asus HD 4890 1GB GDDR5 Dual DVI HDTV Out PCI-E Graphics Card.
I am most disappointed. All other games and applications on my PC work fine. It is just SL that is a problem.......but it is SL that I use most. Does anybody know what the "unique demands on graphic cards" that SL makes. Can anyone tell me what is different about the HD cards that would prevent them running SL. I am so frustrated Denise |

lack of ATI support

Well, Denise, as cynical as it sounds, I'm damn near convinced that LL is being paid by Nvidia NOT to support ATI or something.
ATI cards have been out for YEARS, and yet LL is the ONLY company who cannot program for them. Doesn't even recognize most of them. I wish instead of screwing up the web page and screwing up the transactions pages, they'd actually hire some staff that FIXED things for a change. I swear to god, it's like they're TRYING to drive away their long-term residents. |
