hello ... need a hand here

just purchased a new Laptop

fast specs
dual intel centrino 2.2 ghz
3gig Ram
Gforce 8600M GS
runs on windows Vista...

Now...my old PC was a windows XP machine...ran the game without any problems
the PC fryed...so decided to go with this beauty i got now....wich im very happy with by the way...but the old machine ran SL way better..and had about half the specs

when i enter the game...movement is more fluent on my new laptop
but the graphics takes AGES! to update...and i do mean ..freaking AGES!
i have to stand in a zone for about 5-10 minutes ..then it has loaded the basic textures on floor and walls and such...sometimes i may never see the more advanced ones..

this frustrates me alittle

any help is highly apreciated

If the "movement is smoother" but things take longer to download, it sounds like a networking issue--how is your laptop connected to the internet?

Ensure that you've got your max bandwidth set in Edit > Preferences

Reboot the router and modem. Turn off the Aero features in Vista. Update the drivers for your graphics card. Update the drivers for your network interface card. You got a new machine........the drivers are almost assuredly outdated. Vista without the bells and whistles will take just about 1 gig of your RAM.........with them I'm not sure but I can tell you when I launched SL on this Vista PC with pretty much the same specs at yours, I could barely play the game until I turned off the pretties Microsoft thought I would like.

I would also recommend going to the advanced specs and see how much memory is being dedicated to virtual memory. K this is how it was done in XP, in vista, not entirely sure. Goto start, get the menu up, right click on the my computer drive, goto properties.

Goto the advanced tab, you should have a virtual drive tab, button, not sure with vista. It is called performance in XP, and it lists how much memory can be dedicated to processing and RAm, and how much really is being dedicated. Either way it will give you a max in kb, set it to the highest you can. That should help dedicate more memory to your computer's performance.

That computer is more than adequate to run Aero and SL at the same time (not that performance is the issue, as the OP is getting good frame rates. Rather, their client isn't downloading textures very quickly).

Virtual memory in Vista is set to Automatic by default. Please do not change this, as it can cause out of memory conditions (or waste disk space, depending on which direction you go).

OP: Another thought. View > Statistics Bar

Watch the download speed when you enter a new area. What's the average speed that you're seeing?

regarding the fancy AERO in vista....i have my Theme set to Classic windows
since i play alot of games this greatly improves on FPS.
and to last poster...my average download seems to bee around 650 kbps

You have a cable internet connection...........how do you connect that computer to the modem? Via a router? Is that connection hard wired (Cat 5E ethernet cable)? Wireless?

Without knowing your ISP and plan, I can't say whether your connection is maxing out or not, but regardless, it's not a bad speed. It shouldn't be taking so long for textures to appear.

What are your quality settings like in SL?

Your specs look ok (tho I would feel better about the 8600 GS if someone shows up who's using one. The GS versions of Nvidia's cards are pretty low-end. But it should be OK).

Here's an odd thought: is it possible that your laptop's power management is interfering? SL is going to respond horribly if your disk spins down between accesses, or if you CPU is only running at 75%!

In any case, your new whizzy PC runs worse than your old machine on the same network connection, probably it is not the network. Perhaps the laptop is doing something in the background that you don't know about. Is Vista busy doing housekeeping of any sort? Did you change antivirus, antispyware, or your firewall?

Default on your new computer will likely be different than default on your old computer.

Can you check the slider, and tell us what it's set to?
