Class 5 sim on slower server :(
|
Do you think that all class 5 sims should cost the same if speeds are not the same?

i was told that some of the 5 class sims are on the fastest servers and some are on the slowest ones, mine happens to be on a slow one and crashes nearly everyday i pay good money to run my sim and cant afford it crashing all the time.
when are all class 5 sims going to be on the same faster server i would like to know as its getting very anoying when all day i lag and cant tp in to or out of my sim
Drew Redyard Says: what I would like to know is when this connection problem is going to be corrected...we have no animations running and absolutely no reason for this sim to crash every day when other sims are getting super fast speeds. we all pay the same amount for our sims...and some sims have blisteringly fast speeds while others lag to the point of not being able to tp in and out.

From: Xander Sporleder i was told that some of the 5 class sims are on the fastest servers and some are on the slowest ones Well, here's one person telling you differently - class 5 hardware is class 5 hardware. Also, whenever your region restarts (except when LL is doing a rolling restart) you're going to end up on a different server so even if there were different flavors of class 5, you're not going to be stuck on a lesser one forever. If your region is consistantly slow, post the region name - maybe somebody will stop by and take a look at it. Several people around here are decent at tracking down problems.

From: Xander Sporleder Basic Fps Below 15
Bandwidth Bellow 100 Those two are stats about how your PC is doing, not about how the sim is doing.. From: Xander Sporleder Physics Fps Between 40 And 44.5 Sim FPS should be right above that stat. I usually look at the sim FPS instead since it's a more general stat on how happy the sim is (but they usually read pretty close to each other). I heard you had lots of scripts on that region. What's the Active Scripts count at?

From: Xander Sporleder 11000 That's a lot. A real lot. My club, on a packed weekend night, might get up to 10k.. Even if you just can't find any highly-scripted objects that you live without, try picking up a few until you can get it under 10k and see how the sim behaves. Enabling beacons with Scripted Objects (not "Scripted Objects With Touch" is a good way to spot highly-scripted areas.

Second Life Lies
10-22-2009 18:54
From: Sindy Tsure Those two are stats about how your PC is doing, not about how the sim is doing.. okay if that is true...why is it that I am running a very fast system..current bandwith test states I am getting 20000 kbps and in game the max I can have is 900..seems to me that they have servers from 5 years ago. I think that they need to reinvest some of the money that we all pay for said game to make game play better for everyone. At 300 dollars per sim for the monthly fee you cannot tell me that spend that much...In fact as a person who actually runs servers I can say that their systems are so outdated that someone needs to really look at why we pay such enormous fees to this company. Game play is infinged upon by the constant lag...games with much higher graphics, many more people on at all times, and higher animations such as Guild Wars ( free to play) EverQuest and Wow (14 dollars a month) have much faster servers and much better customer service...and millions of people play those games compared to the 50000 or so people on at any given moment, and we pay 400 dollars a month for the one sim and I pay an addition 50 dollars a month to own mainland which lags up so bad that I can't even move...on EMPTY land. So when are they going to start spending some money to make game play better instead of lining their pockets?

Your internet bandwidth capacity really doesn't have much to do with how quickly your system can draw the screen.
The two big things that will help your FPS (but not the sim FPS) is more memory and a better graphics card. If you're a bit on the low side with memory, you can try shutting down other things that are running when you're in SL. If your graphics card is a starting to get some gray hairs, turning down the settings is about all you can do.
Yes, for what we get graphics-wise compared to games, SL is way behind. How much of the stuff on your region was done by people who design game graphics for a living, people who understand the trade offs and pitfalls and know and think about the cost/benifit of every detail that goes into every single object, though? How many of the scripts you're running were written by people who are write software for a living and understand the implications of the scripts they write?
For a given PC, SL will always, ALWAYS, be behind games that were done 100% by professional game makers. We get nearly unlimited freedom in what we create, though. It's a trade-off, like everything else...
edit: and as for your regions lag, you're simply pushing the sim too hard. 11k scripts on a region without tons of people is about twice what you should have. Scripts aren't free, ya know. They take up memory on the sim, they take up processing power on the sim. Even scripts that aren't doing anything consume both memory and cpu..

No one can win an argument with know it alls........those who "have the best, the fastest, can play any game every created (except SL )". These people are quick to spout off how good their system is, how fast their connection is, how "professional" their RL experience is in the computer realm.........but they have problems they cannot solve. Strange that someone like me with no professional training in computer at all, a nearly 4 year old off the shelf high end business (not game) machine with a decent (but not exceptional) connection speed (if you are interested that's just under 25,000 kbps), a mere 3 gigs of DDR2 RAM, a decent (again not the best) graphics card can run SL with a pretty consistant 25 to 35 FPS, a pretty consistant 900 k bandwidth, and experience no excessive lag. Wonder why that is.

Check out Newegg.com......search for nVidia 9800 cards. You should be able to find a 9800GT for around 80 bucks (a 9800GTX or GTX+ for about 20 to 30 bucks more). That series of cards run SL very well (I have the 9800GTX+). But, if your power supply is the stock one that came with your computer you'll probably need to upgrade that too.........the 9800GT requires 400 watts, the 9800GTX+ requires 450 watts).
And, yes, you will see a substantial increase in performance...........I can run SL at ultra and draw distance at 256 to get my consistant 25 to 35 FPS.

If you have two identical servers, one running WOW and one running SL, the SL one will be much busier because SL supports user-created content. SL does much more dynamic rendering WORK per viewed scene than a game with mostly static content (i.e. all of the games you mentioned). As Sindy said, there may be an issue with the expertise of SL creators compared to 3D professionals, but really the BIG hit is that user-created content can crop up anywhere. Even if it were all perfectly optimal, SL's servers and client would still have to do much more work than WOW's.

The video card. The 8500 was never a great card to begin with. That system with a decent card should be good to go for another year or so but not much longer with the rate things change in SL so I wouldn't spend a lot on upgrading it........save for the next computer you build . As I suggested earlier the 9800GT would be a good choice.....it has a darned good track record for use with SL. It's also very reasonably priced right now when the new cards nVidia is coming out with. You can find that card for around $80 USD online (maybe even in retail stores too......but probably not since everyone hypes the newer stuff). I'm pretty sure the 8500 card requires 400 watts so, assuming you got an adequate power supply when you built your machine, you should be okay there. One thing to take note of with the 9800GT is that it's longer and fatter than the 8000 series cards.........you may have to move one or more of your internal drives to make room lengthwise AND the card, when installed in it's slot, partially covers the slot below it. You may have to move something down one slot if that slot is populated already. The size difference is due to the cooling fans on the card.......that card runs a good 20 degrees celsius lower than your 8500 (so it's worth the effort......in my opinion, anyway). You know, of course, that any card you get now for your present computer can be put in your next one........so it's not wasted money. Same goes for your hard drive, optical drive, power supply, card readers, etc. By the way, I like that monitor.
